By TED FRIEDMAN
It was revealed Wednesday that
a special meeting took place last
month between officials of the
University of Wisconsin and high
officers of the American Legion
concerning "subversive activities"
of students.
Although details of the meeting
were not released, it reportedly
concerned the Daily Cardinal,
Wisconsin's student newspaper,
and the university's policy towards
the Labor Youth League.
Wisconsin is the only university
in the nation which grants full
privileges to the Labor Youth Lea-
gue which is listed as subversive by
the Attorney General.
Refuses to Define 'Americanism'
At the same time, the legion in-
formed the Wisconsin Liberal Club
that it refuses to define "Ameri-
canism." The Wisconsin Liberal
Club requested the legion's defini-
tion after the legion began its
original inquiry into the staff of
the Daily Cardinal.
"We have never attemted an
official definition of the American
Way of Life as you suggest," G.
E. Sipple, department commander
said in a letter to the club.
"Most of us at college age were
more preoccupied with the princi-

pal military exponents of the
American Way of Life rather than
its philosophers."
Petitioned for Audience
The meeting last month was
called after the American Legion
had petitioned the university for
an audience to express its views,
on the university's polities. Pre-
sent at the meeting were Wiscon-
sin's president E. B. Fred and
the rational chairman of the le-
gion's" Americanism committee.
The legion has steadfastly op-
posed the university's policies.
