Black

anti-poverty
budget fight
WASHINGTON, DC--
Members of the Congres
sional Black Caucus (CBC)
are leading the legislative
. fight to save President Clin
ton's anti-poverty budget in
itiatives. In fact, they may
be fighting harder than
Clinton himself.
In a letter to the presi
dent recently, the CBC in
effect threatened Clinton to
stand by his own anti-pov- .
erty initiatives ifD wanted
of the 3Acaucus mem-
rs for the rest of his
budget plan. The letter la
beled several anti-poverty
proposals as "non-nego
tiable."
The President is corning
under heavy pressure from
republicans and conserva
tive democrats to abandon
at least some ofhis anti-pov
erty proposals. The presi
dent's package totals $41.5
billion and includes money
for reform of the food stamp
program, tax breaks for low
income people and spending
for urban enterprise zones.
. When asked if the Black.
caucus was trying to hold
the p ident's budget "hos
tage" to its demands, New
York representative Char
les Rangel responded: "I
 don't like the word hostage.
I like the words 'political pri-
orities." .

When store owners began to
comply with the rules and regu
lations set by the Michigan De
partment of Agriculture, positive
things began to happen.
Eddie Aboona, owner of
Americana Foods, located at
15041 Plymouth, was presented
with the SMSFIF a ward for op
erating under sanitary condi
tions. However, that hasn't
always' been the case.
Earlier this year Americana
was cited several times by
NAACP secret shoppers and
SMSFIF for operating under un
sanitary conditions.
Aboona got-busy and in a shot
period of time, he was able to
turn the store around 100 per
cent.
. "TIllS IS ONE award I am
proud to present," Shabazz said.
"When I came here a fe weeks
ago I didn't have much faith that
the owner would cooperate with
us. But he has done a fine job
cleaning up the store. The meats
and produce look fresh and the'
floors are clean. On behalf of the
NAACP Secret Shoppers,
SMSFIF, area residents and
other oommunity groups we hope
that Americana will serve as a .
model for inner-city merchants ...
Aboona says he .appreciates
all that the organizations have
done for him and his business
and that he will continue to work
for the good of the community.
"Whenever store owners com
ply fully with the law t by the

culture and community stand

Shabazz said.
