T

he next step in the Orthodox
Union's ongoing Safe Homes,
Safe Schools, Safe Shuls
Initiative is a series of three short vid-
eos created for parents on the impor-
tance of Internet safety.
Philip Rosenthal, a New York-based
Internet safety expert, shares informa-
tion and tips via the videos, each of
which is shorter than five minutes.
The videos include
"Technology of
Today," an overview
of technological
devices; "Safety Tips','
regarding protection
from online threats;
and "Practical
Suggestions," high-

safe.
The hope of the program is to "share
an educational awareness of the pitfalls
of technology, which can be a brachah
[blessing] and, on the other hand, a
klala [curse]," said Frank Buchweitz,
the OU's national director of commu-
nity services and special projects. "It
can be very damaging and hurtful if
used incorrectly'
He cites the videos, which include
information on safe use of the Internet,
cell phones, iPods and gaming devices,
as "a continuation of the efforts of the
OU in regard to the safety of our chil-
dren and our homes."
Many of Rosenthal's safeguards are
specific to various pieces of technol-
ogy including an urging to parents to
reconsider buying certain computer
network-based devices for their chil-
dren. "The Internet can be a very
dangerous place and the computer can
be a vehicle to get you to a very danger-
ous place. It can be used in a potentially
very negative way, but it can also be
used in a very positive way'
