New Hires Expand JN Role
In Revitalizing Jewish Detroit

The Detroit Jewish News and its parent company,
Renaissance Media, are expanding their initiative
to help revitalize and more favorably position the
Southeastern Michigan Jewish community to young
adults and young families.

Karen Schwartz and Bryan Gottlieb have joined
the Renaissance Media staff in positions that will
accelerate the transformation of the company's
product offerings, including a major push into
digital and alternative media. These
initiatives will be targeted to Jewish
young adults and young families
who live in Southeastern Michigan
or are interested in relocating here.

Parallel to the campaign, the Jewish News convened
14 young leaders in April and asked them to envision
a compelling and attractive Jewish future in Detroit
and Southeastern Michigan. Their discussion,
passion, ideas and commitment were captured in an
April 29th Jewish News cover story, the same issue
that introduced the Southeastern Michigan Jewish
Alliance (SEMJA).

The expanded efforts will further
fuel the company's Southeastern
Michigan Jewish Alliance (SEMJA),
a collaboration anchored by the
Jewish communities of Detroit and
Ann Arbor and focused on expanding economic and
job-creating opportunity in the region while touting
its quality of life, and Jewish life.

In response to the alarming decline in the Detroit
Jewish community's population (especially among
young adults) contained in the 2005 Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit demographic
study, the Jewish News initiated a three-year editorial
campaign to challenge the community and its
leaders to take creative and bold steps to stabilize the
population and reposition and market Southeastern
Michigan as an attractive place for Jewish young
adults and young families.

This February, the Jewish News initiated a weekly
full-page advertising campaign starring young adults
attesting to the quality of life, and Jewish life, in the
region. This was quickly expanded to a second full

Karen Schwartz has been
working with the Detroit
Jewish News since high school
and is excited to be
focusing on Detroit's cutting
edge. Schwartz is a graduate of
the University of Michigan and
holds a Master's in Journalism
from Columbia University.
She believes very strongly in
using technology to empower
and strengthen communities,
while simultaneously
understanding there's nothing

tacked to grandma's fridge.
Karen has also been writing
business sections and articles
in New York.

By June, the "SEMJA pages" in the
Jewish News were further expanded,
with focus on 20-somethings, young
families, business/entrepreneurship
and a full page of job openings. A
SEMJA website and other social
media were added to the information
and communications mix.

Taking their commitment to help lead and reshape
the community to a higher level, the 14 young leaders
convened by the Jewish News crafted and endorsed
"The Southeastern Michigan Jewish Declaration"
in July. It is a positive and proactive vision for a
vibrant and vital region with a pledge to take action,
and inspire others to do the same. The Declaration
appeared in the September 2nd issue of the Jewish
News (you can view and sign the declaration at www.
thejewishnews/declaration.com).

The addition of Karen Schwartz and Bryan Gottlieb
to the staff, plus continuing contributions from
Rachel Lachover and a growing cadre of freelancers
and bloggers, underscores the commitment by
Renaissance Media and the Jewish News to take a
leadership role in the debate and discussion that
will lead to the revitalization and reshaping of our
region's Jewish community.
