Wayne State University Stroke Center
is seeking individuals who have suffered a
stroke that has caused weakness in one hand
and/or arm to participate in an investigational
research study.

Purpose: The study will assess the safety and effectiveness

of an implanted device* in treating patients who have

reduced hand and/or arm function after stroke.

Participation Criteria: Patients at least 21 years of age

who have suffered a stroke, which has caused weakness

in one hand and/or arm, may be eligible for this study.

All costs related to the study
and rehabilitation will be
covered for those who qualify.

The event, "Focus on the Heart:
Recent Developments in Women's
Heart Health," will be held 9-11:30
a.m. at the Royal Oak William
Beaumont Hospital.
Presenters will include Dr. Pam
Marcovitz on "Women are Different,
Understanding Cardiac Care in
Women Patients." Dr. Marcovitz is
the director of Beaumont's
Ministrelli Women's Heart Center
and is trained in internal medicine
and cardiology.
Dr. Iva Smolens, a cardio-thoracic
surgeon, who specializes in cardio-
vascular disease in women, will
address "Procedures and Surgical
Techniques for Women with Heart
Damage."
Nancy Kennedy, registered dieti-
cian with the Ministrelli Heart
Center, who has 30 years of experi-
ence in the field of cardiovascular
disease, nutrition and wellness, will
speak on "Understanding Nutrition
and Exercise for a Healthy Heart:
Including a Discussion of Fad Diets
and Recent Changes in the Food
Pyramid."
The program is open to the public
for $18, which covers a kosher con-
tinental breakfast and complimenta-
ry valet parking. Reservations are

requested.
The Jewish Women's Foundation
of Metropolitan Detroit (JWF) is a
grant making and educational foun-
dation established to enhance the
lives of Jewish women and girls
through philanthropy. JWF Trustees
participate in all aspects of the
Foundation's governance, planning
and grant making. To become JWF
trustees, women in the community
make financial commitments enti-
tling them to Board membership.

Na'amat USA Greater Detroit council
will hold its annual donor luncheon
noon Thursday, Oct. 21, at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
The speaker will be Rabbi Arnie
Sleutelberg of Congregation Shir
Tikvah. His topic will be "Jewish
Humor Through the Ages."
Lee Wagman, past council president,
is chairing the event.

contribution for support of the organi-
