PERSPECTIVES from page 65

Steve and Cokie Roberts' jointly
written story of their marriage,
From This Day Forward (William
Morrow & Co., $24), is more
than a poignant and witty series of
personal vignettes. Interspersed
between recollections of the pri-
vate challenges — and dilemmas
--- of their courtship are wonder-
ful chronicles of real people from
the pages of history.
In a phone interview with the
Jewish News before his speech in
Detroit, Roberts shared these
thoughts from the book and on
politics.

JN: Besides wanting to tell
your own very fascinating story,
what motivated you and Cokie to
write the book?
Roberts: "Through my teaching
I'm frequently in contact with stu-
dents who have had to face the
breakdowns of their own parents'
separations and divorce. I've been
amazed that, contrary to what you
might expect, they almost unani-
mously still say they want to get
married and build a family some-
day, and are hopeful they will do
it.
"Cokie and I both have often
felt that we had a role not just in
the media and not just in the
classroom, but outside those areas,
too. We often meet with young
people for conversation and brain-
storming, and enjoy their views
on issues and events.

America has already benefited greatly
from the contributions of both Jewish
senators and congressmen and achiev-
ers in other arenas.
"It would be a good thing for us to
have a Jewish top official. It sends a very
encouraging message to other minori-
ties, such as African Americans, Latinos
and Asians, that they can accomplish
the same thing in the future.
From his years as a White House and
congressional correspondent for the New
York Times, senior political writer for
U.S. News and WOW. Report, and ongo-
ing contributions to public television's
Washington Week in Review and CNN's
Late Edition, Roberts has concluded that
