voting in their first political elec-
tion?
Roberts: "Young people don't
have the same roots in the com-
munity that their parents and eld-
ers do, such as taxes, for example.
But I continue to get the sense of
their interest and commitment to
social justice. And many have the
adult responsibility of dealing
with student loans. There are also,
among the student population, as
many people who claim to identi-
fy with Republicans as do those
who consider themselves
Democrat."
JN: Do you believe candidates'
positive or negative associations
with other people sway most vot-
ers?
Roberts: "I think the 'Coat-tails
Effect' is an over-rated factor. But
there is certainly some connection.
Because the like-ability of former
President George and Barbara
Bush were the first facts [some]
people knew about George W, it
helps him.
"Also, being married to Tipper
is a very good thing for [Vice
President] Al Gore. She made an
admirable and very positive
impact on the general population
when she was so candid about her
previous mental-health issues.
'And who would have thought
`The Kiss' [Al's kiss of Tipper at

there are only two major campaign slo-
gans: "It's time for a change" and "You
never had it so good."
Blurring The Lines
Roberts also asked a seemingly rhetori-
cal question of his audience. "Can you
tell me the difference between
`Compassionate Conservative' and a
`Pragmatic Liberal'?"
Roberts said the blurring of the
major political parties' lines is actually
what often allows their candidates to
be successful, even though the reverse
should be true.
