In a phone interview with the Jewish News before his speech in Detroit, Roberts shared these thoughts from the book and on politics. JN: Besides wanting to tell your own very fascinating story, what motivated you and Cokie to write the book? Roberts: "Through my teaching I'm frequently in contact with stu- dents who have had to face the breakdowns of their own parents' separations and divorce. I've been amazed that, contrary to what you might expect, they almost unani- mously still say they want to get married and build a family some- day, and are hopeful they will do it. "Cokie and I both have often felt that we had a role not just in the media and not just in the classroom, but outside those areas, too.
