Hebrew Program
Edith Covensky, poetess and lec-
turer in Hebrew language and lit-
erature, will teach "Jewish
Civilization from Abraham to the
Establishment of the Modern
State of Israel" at the Wayne
State University Farmington
Hills Extension Center this fall.
This course will concentrate on
Russian and European Jewry.
The course is offered by the De-
partment of Near Eastern and
Asian Studies, College of Liberal
Arts at Wayne State University
and will be conducted from 4:30
p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Tuesdays at the
extension center on 12 Mile and

Temple Plans
Judaism Course
Temple Israel will begin an 11-
week Introduction to Judaism
class beginning on Tuesday, Oct.
1, at 7:30 p.m. at the temple. The
class is open to anyone interest-
ed in learning more about Ju-
daism or converting to Judaism.
The class will cover Jewish tra-
ditions, history, life-cycle and hol-
iday celebrations, and Israel; it
will be taught by Rabbi M. Robert
Syme, Rabbi Harold S. Loss, Rab-
bi Paul M. Yedwab, Rabbi Joshua
L. Bennett and Cantor Harold
Orbach.
The cost of the course is $100
per couple and $80 per individ-
ual, with a $55 book fee. Class
dates are Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22; Nov. 5,
12, 19, 26; Dec. 3, 10, 17.

The Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit will hold its annu-
al meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday Sept.
24, at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek.
Robert H. Naftaly will be nom-
inated as president for a second
term. David B. Hermelin will re-
ceive the Fred M. Butzel Memo-
rial Award for distinguished
community service. Mr. Hermelin
is a member of Federation's Board
of Governors and Executive Com-
mittee, former Federation vice
president and a former Allied Jew-
ish Campaign chairman.
Nominees for election to the
board of governors as members-
at-large also will be announced
during the meeting.
