The Institute for Single Jewish
Mothers, a program of the Agency
for Jewish Education's Jewish Ex-
periences for Families, will host
all single Jewish mothers and
their daughters, ages 12 and old-
er, to a program on assault pre-
vention and self-defense.
"Chazak Ve'ematz: Be Strong,
Be Courageous" is scheduled for
Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 7-9 p.m.
at the Agency for Jewish Educa-
tion, 21550 W. 12 Mile Road,
Southfield. The program will fea-
ture Jaye Spiro, a 4th-degree
black belt and past chairperson
of the National Women's Martial
Arts Federation. Ms. Spiro will
teach techniques for assault pre-
vention, including verbal and
physical responses to potential-
ly threatening situations. Partic-
ipants are encouraged to wear
comfortable shoes.
There is a program fee of $7
per individual or $5 each per
mother/daughter(s). Financial as-
sistance is available as well as free
child care and children's safety
program by registration only for
children three years and older.

Apples, Honey
Holiday Fun
The community is invited to cel-
ebrate and prepare for the up-
coming holidays at the 10th
annual Apples & Honey & Lots,
Lots More. Hosted by the Agency
for Jewish Education's Jewish Ex-
periences for Families and The
Jewish News, the event is sched-
uled for Sunday, Sept. 8, from 1 -
3:30 p.m. at the Agency for Jewish
Education, 21550 W. 12 Mile
Road, Southfield.
There will be activities for chil-
dren, parents and grandparents.
The Shofar Factory will return
with lessons on shofar blowing
and kosher horns for $10 each, as
well as lulays, etrogs and Sukkah
kits. Holiday treats and other
kosher food also will be on sale at
the event.
Apples & Honey is free of
charge; however, food to feed the
hungry is requested as tzedakah
admission. Pre-registration is re-
quired for the Shofar Factory. Ap-
ples & Honey will be held, rain or

Blood Drive
Seeks Donors
Adat Shalom Synagogue will hold
a Blood Donor Drive on Sunday,
Sept. 8. Trained Red Cross spe-
cialists will be on hand from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m.
