Photographer Nina Glaser of San
Francisco will show her current
work at the Book Beat Gallery
Jan. 14. She works almost ex-
clusively with the human figure,
setting up her stark and unset-
tling tableaux amid mysterious
and haunting backgrounds. The
theatrical images are set up by
the artist according to sketches
and ideas thought out before-
hand.
Born and raised in Israel, Ms.
Glaser is a self-taught photogra-
pher whose work conveys a twi-
light beauty, a unique blending
of mythology and poetics of the
body.
The Book Beat Gallery is lo-
cated at 26010 Greenfield, Oak
Park. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-
9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 11
a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.

Ko's work can be put into context
by a Korean anecdote about an
ancient wall painting of an old
pine tree that was so realistic that
real birds struggled to sit on the
tree only to fail and die. Mr. Ko
emphasizes the Korean tradition
that drawing is an illusion, and
a picture is a mirror to reflect the
world.
