FEATURING NEW SHIPMENT
FROM ENGLAND

"Between the Black and the White," painted in 1990.

cording to Mrs. Nelson, have been
especially difficult to view for
survivors and their families.
In 'The Family," an eerie 1974
oil painting, those who went
"nameless and faceless" are re-
membered as endless lines of
Jews walk to a crematory. And,
in "Smoke," the plumes of smoke
are transformed into rows and
rows of tombstones steadily as-
cending into a darkened sky.
"He's working his way through
agony and depression," Mrs. Nel-
son said. "Nothing is hidden or
put away. He seems to be saying
that all survivors must tell their
stories."
In many ways, the retrospec-
tive is a story told by the artist as
survivor.
When he was 6 years old, Mr.
Bak and his family were sent to
the Vilna Ghetto. During an at-
tack on a synagogue during Yom
Kippur services, many of his fam-
ily members were killed. Later,
Mr. Bak was hidden in a

monastery and to this day, the
themes of hiding and being se-
questered infuse his work. Only
he and his mother survived
through the Displaced Persons
camps.
Ironically, Bak's "Nuremberg
Elegie" was created to be hung in
the Nuremberg Gallery, in the
city where nearly all Jews were
killed. The portrayal of the con-
templative Jewish man ponder-
ing his faith in a crumbling moral
universe, however, was not ac-
cepted by the gallery.❑
