She continued, however, on a
completely different tack. Hav-
ing said the above, she admitted
that she was sick and tired of be-
ing confronted with pictures of
slender models, tempting her to
buy bathing sAits and other prod-
ucts in the delusion that she, too,
can look like the pictures.
It appears, hit writes, that the
advertising copy writers believe
that associating any product with
pictures of semi-naked women
will somehow stimulate sales.
The new ban should now prove
conclusively, she said, that the
absence of sex themes from the
billboards will not result in di-
minished sales. In fact there is
no evidence whatever that the
kind of advertising so popular to-
day has any effect at all on sales.
These are not the themes which
induce people to buy. Want to in-
crease sales? She has her own
sage advice. Just put up a notice
regarding that the product, what-
ever it is, together with a banner
. announcing that a 50 percent dis-
count is in effect—and watch the
sales mount!
We ought to be grateful to the
haredim for cleaning up the ad-
vertising atmosphere, she con-
cludes—and that's a kind of
freedom, too.
Spokesmen for billboard com-
panies stated clearly that moral-

ity had nothing to do with their
adoption of the new policy. Their
job is to serve the market, not to
fight it. There is, indeed, a law
against public pornography. The
Orthodox could have made the
matter a legal one by going to the
courts, and launching in all-out
assault against the extremes to
which some advertising has gone.
It could make a convincing case
showing that pictures of women
in sensual poses had nothing to
do with the qualities of an auto-
mobile which was being offered
for sale, but was merely pander-
ing to the erotic. Court battles
revolving around definitions of
pornography could have dragged
on for years, but this would not
have meant that sales would go
up, perhaps to the contrary.
The Orthodox chose the more
direct and immediate path. If we
don't like the way you advertise,
we have the right and the free-
dom not to buy your products—
and we won't.
The billboards are being
cleaned up. Commercial peace
has been restored, at least for the
time being. But the secular ele-
ments in the country are licking
their wounds, determined to
renew the struggle against the
new and unlikely coalition which
now faces them—the Orthodox
allied with the feminists who are
ntent on preserving the dignity
of womanhood.

We wish our family and friends a
very healthy, happy and prosperous
New Year.
