Bird Lovers
Track Storks

SIMON GRIVER

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Storks wade in marshes.

Ornithologists in Israel have
launched an ambitious project to
monitor the migratory routes of
storks. Two storks were caught
during the fall and fitted with
small transmitters that will en-
able a satellite to track their
movements. The highly distinc-
tive long-legged birds were cap-
tured while wading in marshes
on Israel's coastal plain, pre-
sumably taking a rest en route
between Europe and Africa.
"It wasn't easy catching them,"
admitted Haim Alfia of the Israel
Raptor Center. "We leapt out at
them after they had landed in the
marshes where they couldn't take
off too quickly."
The project is sponsored joint-
ly by the Society for the Protec-
tion of Nature in Israel, and the
Israel Raptor Center and Ger-
many's Max Planck Institute.
The transmitters only weigh
50 grams, enabling the storks to
carry them comfortably strapped
to their backs. Signals will be re-
layed via the French satellite Er-
gos every 90 minutes pinpointing
the storks' position to within 500
meters. The technology will pro-
vide especially useful information
about the birds' habits in coun-
tries where little ornithological
data is available. In total, it is
planned to tag some 100 storks
with the satellite transmitters.
