SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
The battle of the billboards in Is-
rael is over, with complete capit-
ulation by one side. Those who
have watched the development
of the struggle will recall that it
was launched by the Orthodox el-
ements of the population, pri-
marily in Jerusalem, against
what they considered porno-
graphic advertising, showing
women in various stages of un-
dress.
Bus shelters containing such
ads were defaced and later
burned down. Then came the
threat of the haredim to boycott
all products which resorted to
such advertising. Considering
that in Jerusalem the purchas-
ing power of the Orthodox is es-
timated at 40 percent or more of
the potential market, the threat
was a real one.
The war is over. The adver-
tising agencies concerned have
yielded and have agreed to a new
code governing their ads, accord-
ing to which there will be no more
ladies in bikinis presented in larg-
er than life size, no more naked
limbs, no more undressed women
crawling on all fours, no more
suggestive double entendres with
sexual connotations.
Reaction in the press has been
mixed. One writer complains in-
dignantly and wonders what will
be banned next—pictures of men
without head covering?
A woman columnist, hit Linor,
writing in Haaretz, drew ap-
proving poster pictures of women
in bathing suits, and shapely
models in alluring poses, will
mean that for some of the popu-
lation an element of joy will have
gone out of life.
Furthermore, she went on, the
threat of economic boycott con-
stituted a serious violation of free-
dom of expression, and a crude
intervention by the forces of re-
action and darkness in the nor-
mal operations of a free market.
Best wishes for a
happy, healthy
New Year.
