of the season and pro-

"There was a celebra-
tion of the opening of the
Arthur Rubenstein Thea-
tre and the creation of the
Arthur Rubinstein Soc-
iety, a Sao Paulo cultural
group," he recalled.
"A little after the inau-
guration of the theater,
they invited our orchestra
to do a special concert to
celebrate the anniversary
of the independence of
Israel, and after this first
concert, I was invited
back in 1989 and 1990. In
1991, I came to the
United States."
Before moving to
Michigan, Mr. Averbach
was guest conductor for
symphonies in Europe
and was maestro for radio
and TV concerts in Bul-
garia, where he recorded
two compact discs with
the Bulgaria Radio
Symphony Orchestra.
On a trip to Israel, he
learned about the person-
alities of musicians he
admires by visiting with
his aunt, who worked for
the Israeli Philharmonic
Orchestra for 40 years.
She cared for the guest
residence for visiting
musicians and built a col-
lection of photographs
and autographs.
"Thanks to her, I could
meet Isaac Stern when he
came to Ann Arbor," Mr.
Averbach said. "We
talked a lot, and he knew
and liked my aunt."
In 1992, Mr. Averbach
participated in the Tan-
glewood Music Festival,
where he was awarded
the Maurice Abravanel
Scholarship for the
Seminar for Conductors.
The two songs written for
the upcoming concert are
in honor of Maestro Ab-
ravanel, Tanglewood resi-
dent conductor who is cel-
ebrating his 90th birth-
day this month and who
plans to be at the event.
With the tribute in
mind, Mr. Averbach made
Sunday's program selec-
tions.
"I thought it was impor-
tant to play a different
range of styles," said the
Brazilian director. The
Sephardic songs can be
distinguished by fast
movements around cer-
tain notes ❑
