BACKGROUND: Barbara Katz Stollman
grew up in Detroit on Hartwell. Her
father, Sam Katz, was in charge of
maintenance at Hudson's, while her
mother Eva was a homemaker. Stollman
attended Vernor School through the
eighth grade and in January, 1960, was
in the graduating class of Mumford
High School.
As a youngster, she enjoyed ice
skating and making jewelry. She has
fond memories of her father taking her
to sporting events. During her teenage
years she was involved in Temple Israel
Youth Group and B'nai B'rith Girls
(BBG). She recalls campaigning for the
United Jewish Appeal as part of a BBG
event.
Her university years were spent at
Monteith College, a former renaissance
college at Wayne State University.
During college she met her future
husband Bernard through his sister,
Sandy Stollman Greenstone. In 1963
they were married.
Stollman was a teacher at
Longfellow Elementary School for one
year before raising a family. Just after
the birth of her daughter in 1966, she
went to Israel and found the trip
inspiring. She recalls visiting a bomb
shelter and thinking that she couldn't
walk away without helping the country.
"I gave my first pledge as a young
married and have been doubling it ever
since?' Stollman acknowledges that her
active fundraising abilities were
encouraged by her good friend, Tillie
Brandwine, and her late mother-in-law,
Frieda Stollman.
Another good friend, Doreen
Hermelin, was responsible for Barbara's
involvement with Israel Bonds.
Stollman began working with Israel
Bonds eight years ago and is now the
national women's chairman. She admits
this is a full time job but acknowledges
that she rarely says no to community
involvement.
She is a past president of the
American Women for Bar-Ilan
University. The Stollman family helped
create Bar-Ilan and they recently
