of its strategy to prepare
itself for the world of avia-
tion that will exist after
1992, when the Economic
Community will officially
exist as a unified trade and
economic regime.
El Al's aim is to provide a
feed of passengers flying
domestic routes inside the
United States, who would be
flown abroad by the Israeli
airline.
Golan Bus Crash
Claims A Life
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A tour
bus carrying West German
pilgrims plunged off a cliff in
the Golan Heights on Satur-
day, killing one woman and
injuring 49 other passen-
gers.
The bus was owned by the
Iris Middle East Tours Co.,
based in east Jerusalem.
It was traveling in dense
fog on a mountain road when
it was grazed by another
vehicle coming around a
sharp bend.
The bus driver pulled onto
the outer shoulder of the
road and stopped. But the
ground gave way, sending
the vehicle tumbling 50 feet
down a mountainside.
The condition of the road
where the accident occurred
has long been the subject of
complaints to the Public
Works Department.

CPI Up, Housing
Shortage Seen
Jerusalem (JTA) — The 1.8
percent rise in Israel's Oc-
tober Consumer Price Index
was greeted with cautious
optimism by Finance Min-
ister Shimon Peres, who
stressed that it was worse a
year ago.
But Dov Lautman, chair-
man of the Manufacturers
Association, warned that
continuing inflation was
eroding profitability.
The price index rose at an
average annual rate of 18
percent during the first 10
months of 1989, and is ex-
pected to close the year at 20
percent inflation.
That will be cushioned by
cost-of-living allowances
paid most Israeli wage-
earners. But they are not
due until March 1990.
A 4.25 percent rise in the
cost of housing in October
was troubling because it will
escalate sharply if the an-
ticipated influx of im-
migrants from the Soviet
Union and Ethiopia mate-
rializes in the next few
yearS.
