Continued from preceding page

I've seen her first son three
times since then. Now, when
Jordan puts his arms around
me, tells me he doesn't want
me to leave, and asks if I can't
stay and play with him some
more, I don't want to
remember that I once
thought Sylvia should give
him away. Instead I return his
sad little kiss and think, I
should be so lucky someday.
Sylvia, Dan, and Joey take
me back to the airport. Dan
carries Joey in one arm and
holds Sylvia's hand as we
slowly walk together to my
gate. Dan and I hug, warmly
this time. Joey shows me how
he waves goodbye.
Sylvia and I hold on to each
other, hard. She whispers in
my ear that she's glad I came.
I wish I didn't have to leave
so soon, I whisper back.
We step apart and smile. I
wonder how she sees me, this
person who flies in for a cou-
ple of days every few years,
loaded down with luggage
and carefully selected toys.
But it really doesn't matter. I
know now that Sylvia may be
like one of the young women
I see comparing prices in the
Kroger diaper aisle as I whiz
by on my way to frozen foods.
But then later, in the drug ai-
sle, we reach for the same
brand of toothpaste.
"I used to wonder why you
wrote to me," she once said. "I
used to think, Oh, she lives in
a big house with a swimming
pool. Why does she bother
with me?"
I didn't have to say
anything we both knew the
answer. All those years when
we were growing up, we need-
ed someone who would listen
to our problems without
judging our actions. We need-
ed to know someone who was
so different from ourselves
that by imagining the other
person's life, we were forced to
examine our own. Most of all,
we needed a good friend. We
still do. ❑

New U.S. Airline
Is El Al Target

Tel Aviv (JTA) — El Al,
Israel's national air carrier,
is about to acquire a 25 per-
cent stake in a newly formed
American airline, North
American Airlines, whose
application was approved by
the U.S. government two
weeks ago.
North American will begin
operating out of Kennedy
Airport in New York in mid-
January.

managing director, explain-
ed that the Israeli airline is
