NEW YORK - The Chief
Rabbi of France, Rene Sirat,
will meet in New York on
Monday with leaders from
thirty national Jewish
organizations, according to
the World Jewish Congress
(WJC).
Rabbi Sirat will report on
the current state of French
Jewry and discuss the re-
cent wave of anti-Semitism
in France.
Rabbi Sirat will also ad-
dress himself to the issue of
France - Israel relations and
how they have been affected
by the recent events. An
assessment of recent pri-
vate discussions with
President Francois Mitter-
rand will also be on the
agenca.
Meanwhile, the WJC
has released a study
which finds that a con-
certed Arab propaganda
effort in France has been
backed by both left-wing
and rightwing elements.
The study, issued by the
WJC's Institute of Jewish
Affairs, describes the work
of the principal bodies that
spread the Arab point of
view and evaluates the level
of influence which Arab
propaganda has achieved.
The study shows that
France's Middle East
policies and its position
within the European com-
munity were key factors in
its emergence as "ideal
territory for the propaganda
of the Arab states invovled
in the Middle East conflict."

Need for Stable
U.S.-Israel Ties

ANYTIME

NEW YORK (JTA) - Is-
rael's ambassador to the
United States, Moshe
Arens, said last week that
the "major benefits" to the
United States and Israel re-
sulting from the Lebanese
war could be dissipated un-
less there was close coopera- ,;''
tion between Washington
and Jerusalem on future
developments in the Middle
East.
In a report to the Confer-
ence of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organ-
izations, Arens said that
any effort by the Adminis-
tration to "distance" itself
from Israel in order to per-
suade the "so-called Arab
moderates" of America's
good intentions toward
them could prove "destruct-
ive" to both American and
Israeli interests.
