Colo. Woman Seeks Mother

Patricia Anne Madsen of
Denver, Colo., is seeking
the whereabouts of her
mother, Bessie (Betty) Kap-
lan Madsen, who disap-
peared in 1953.
According to Ms. Madsen:
"Before her marriage, my
mother went by either Be-
ssie or Betty Kaplan. Ac-
cording to my birth certifi-
cate, she was born in Riga,
Latvia in 1921. I believe
that her father's name is
David; her mother's name is
unknown at this time. She
has at least one sister, He-
len, believed to be a bit
younger, and at least two
brothers, recalled as older
and perhaps twins.
"The family emigrated to
New York, probably in the
1920s. When my father met
the family in 1942, they
lived in Brooklyn on
Johnson Street or Avenue,
most likely at No. 44. Helen

was then a student, perhaps
part-time and most prob-
ably at Hunter.

"Bessie married Harry
Norman Madsen in
Stuart, Fla., in 1942. I do
not know where she
spent the war years;
when my father was mus-
tered out -in 1945 or 1946,

they settled in Chicago,
where I was born in 1949.

"She and my father
parted, apparently bitterly,
in 1951 or 1952. In 1953, she
vanished. I was raised by
my father's family in Audu-
bon, Iowa; attended Bran-
deis University in the late
1960s, and am now an at-
torney working in the
Domestic Relations Court
in Denver, Colo."
Persons who have infor-
mation on the whereabouts
of Bessie (Betty) Kaplan
Madsen, should contact her
daughter at 1445 Birch St.,
Denver, Colo., 80220, (303)
321-3993, after 8 p.m.
