light . . . That's the dif-
ference between Jacks or
Better and its local pre-
decessor, Spaghetti Co. Two
.. on the south end of Won-
d. erland Shopping Center,
Middlebelt at Plymouth in
Livonia.
No more tripping on the
stairs as you enter . . .
there's plenty of light now
. . . First thing you see after
red posts is an old break-
front which has been reno-
vated into a beautiful red
piece of furniture . . . Then
there's an old Colonial gas
pump with the upper por-
tion a fish tank . . . and over
the bar a hugh ark from a
synagogue in Boston.
A huge 10-foot television
screen off the cocktail
lounge allows participants
of Pac Man to project their
game in very large fashion
. . . This is great for tour-
naments being scheduled by
Jacks or Better owners Jack
and Lenore Freed, who also
own Red Cedars on Nine
Mile and Telegraph . . . To
their knowledge, it is the
first time in the country for
such a screen projection.
Artifacts, antiques, old
photos, stained glass, six
lamps from the streets of
Lansing, etc. adorn the
place ... But the renova-
tion is like magic ... in
color s of reds and white
with smatterings of blue
here and there.
For sure, this is the first
time Jack and Lenore have
taken a place and rebuilt it
from scratch . . . Their
former Apartment Lounge
on Six Mile west of South-
field was doing business
when they took over . . . as
was their present Red
Cedars operation.
They worked three
months prior to hiring 120
people and recently opening
the doors ... Spaghetti Co.
n closed two
Two had bee
months before they took
over the former Farmer
Jack site that Ben Kasle
had one time made into a
showplace.
Seating in two dining
rooms is for 235 people .. .
plus the cocktail lounge for
between 80 and 100 . . . and
a private banquet room for
110 . . . Service is by youth-
ful, effervescent waitresses
and waiters ... all so eager
to make Jacks or Better the
kind of homey, family at-
mosphere so conducive to
informal, comfortable din-
ing . . . at lunch, dinner or
after-theater.
According to Carl
Freiwald of Freiwald and
Perlmutter, interior de-
corators, the bevy of little
pinneapple designs on
the newly upholstered
booths is a sign of hospi-
tality.
The large kitchen, with
its many walls of gleaming
white tile, has been com-
pletely redesigned and re-
novated ... much to the
happiness of those working
back there.
Out front, the light airi-
ness takes away any feeling
of uncleanliness that is

sometimes gotten when a
place is dark.
There's something for
everyone on the menu at
Jacks or Better . . . and our
courteous, efficient and po-
lite young waiter, Bob
White, told of the various
house specials.
Bob is quite a talented
gentleman, by the way .. .
At Henry Ford Commu-
nity College, in his third'
year, Bob is program di-
rector and disc jockey of
the school's radio station
WHFC.
We started off with the
Ante Up (appetizers) of
Munchies (Three of A Kind
. . . button mushrooms, zuc-
chini chips and onion rings
lightly battered and deep
fried) . . . Then a very delici-
ous cup of Clam ,Chowder
which was soup of the day
. . . full-bodied, thick and
tasty . . . Regular house spe-
cialty at Jacks or Better are
homemade Country Veget-
able Soup and homemade
Three - Alarm Chili . . . The
latter is brought in a large
crock and, if requested, top-
ped with cheese and chop-
ped onions.
