Community to Mark Shavuot at Sundown Tuesday

Shavuot, the festival
celebrating the giving of the
Torah to Moses on Mt.
Sinai, will begin at sun-
down Tuesday.
Congregations who have
announced their service
schedules for Shavuot are:

SYNAGOGUE:
Shavuot services 6 p.m.
Tuesday. At 9 a.m. Wednes-
day, there will be adult Bnot
Mitzva. Celebrants are:

Fleischer, Barbara Cook
Ind Betsy Winkelman.

Thursday morning serv-
ices at 9 a.m. will see the

will speak on "Man's Best

Samuel Greenbaum will
chant the liturgy.

Youth, Education Director

Cong. Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses of West Bloom-
field announces that Barry
V. Levine has been named
director of education and
youth. Levine will serve as
the principal of the
synagogue's weekday and
Sunday morning religious
classes and supervise its
youth program.
Levine was educated at
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah.
Since 1967, he has been
an administrator in the De-
troit Public Schools, super-
visor of student teachers in
English at Wayne State
University and University
of Detroit, and has an asso-
ciate professorship at Oak-
land Community College;
was head of the' elective de-
partment for Cranbrook
School's summer program
and was editor of the Cran-
brook Literary magazine.

BARRY LEVINE

Levine was principal of
Hillel Day School from 1974
to 1975, director of youth at
Cong. Beth Achim, educa-
tion director at Temple Beth
Emeth in Ann Arbor and
education director at Tem-
ple Kol Ami.

CONG. BNAI DAVID:
Shavuot will be ushered in
at services 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Wednesday's services will
be held at 8:30 a.m. and 6:30
p.m. Services will begin at
8:30 a.m. Thursday and
Yizkor will be recited at
10:15 a.m. Shavuot evening
services will be held 8:55
p.m. Thursday. Rabbi Mor-
ton F. Yolkut will officiate,
and Cantor Hyman J. Adler
will chant the liturgy, as-
sisted by the synagogue

DOWNTOWN SYNA-
GOGUE: Shavuot ser-
vices will be held 7:30
a.m. Wednesday. Rabbi
Noah M. Gamze will speak
on "The Torah as Dialogue."
Thursday's services will
begin at 7:30 a.m. and Yiz-
kor will be recited at 8:45
a.m. Rabbi Gamze will
speak on "Two Ideas of the
Hereafter." Cantor Harry
Sturm will chant the
liturgy. Additional Yizkor
services will be at 10 a.m.,
11 a.m. and noon.
LIVONIA JEWISH
CONGREGATION:
Shavuot services will begin
at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Wednes-
day's services will begin at 9
a.m. and Thursday's service
will be held at 9 a.m., when
Yizkor will be recited.
Rabbi Martin Gordon will
officiate.
CONG. SHAAREY ZE-
DEK: Services 6 p.m.
Tuesday. First Day Shavuot
services Wednesday will
begin at 8:45 a.m. Michele
Averbuch will recite the
Prayer for Country. Chil-
dren of the Hillel Day
School will present a brief
program. Evening services
will be held at 6. Thursday's
services will be held at 8:45

a.m. and Yizkor will be re-
cited. Evening services will
begin at 8:45. Rabbi Irwin
Groner and Alan B. Lucas
will deliver the sermons,
and Cantors Chaim Najman
and Sidney Rube will chant
the liturgy, assisted by the

The New Temple Israel
announces

Religious School to Open
Branch in West Bloomfield

Cong. Shaarey Zedek will
open a branch religious
school in West Bloomfield
this fall. Classes for
Shaarey Zedek students
vho live in that area will be
held in the Orchard Lake
Middle School.
The branch school will
'sold classes from 4 to 6 p.m.
on Tuesdays and Thurs-
days. All students will
attend classes on Sunday at
the synagogue building,
27375 Bell Road. This
schedule will affect grades
one through eight only.
High school students will
continue to meet from 6:15
to 8 p.m. on Monday and
Wednesday evenings at the
synagogue.
As usual, classes will be
held on Mondays and Wed-
nesdays at the synagogue
building for the majority of
Shaarey Zedek students.
