CETA Fund Ban -
NEW YORK (JTA) —

Proposed new regulations
for Comprehensive
Employment and Training
Act (CIETA) funds, which
would have fo
use of
such funds for
r on-the-job
training for persons in re-
ligious schools and houses of
worship ha,ve been dropped
after protests from a broad
range of Jewish organiza-
tions.
The ban, which would
have included Christian-
sponsored schools and
churches and which also
was protested by Christian
groups, was included in
proposed regulations
scheduled for publication by
the Department of Labor in
the Federal Register on Jan.
19.
Under the on-the-job
training program, particip-
ants are employed for 20
weeks and their wages are
paid half by the employer
and half by CETA. While
exact figures were not im-
mediately available, CETA
grants to Jewish organiza-
tions have totaled hundreds
of thousands of dollars an-
nually. -

Austria Seeking
Israeli Kfirs

VIENNA — Austrian of-
ficials announced last week
that they were negotiating
with Israel for the purchase
of Kfir jet fighter planes.
An Austrian newspaper
reported that Austria was
seeking to buy 24 Kfirs and
assemble them in Austria.
The Kfir reportedly had
been selected over Swedish,
French and American jets.
Last year, Austria repor-
tedly rejected the Kfir be-
cause it did not want to
harm its relations with
Arab countries.
