Nazi Refugees Are Making T heir Homes
Near Sosua in the Dominican Republic

NEW YORK — In May
1940, 37 adults and one
child emigrated from Nazi
Germany to the tiny hamlet
of Sosua on the north Atlan-
tic coast of the Dominican
Republic.
Accepting asylum from
the only country which wel-
comed them, these Jewish
exiles and some 2,000 fol-
lowers transformed this

lush but undeveloped land
into thriving cattle and
dairy farms. They built
their own homes, schools,
and theaters, while the gov-
ernment provided roads and
electricity, and thus was
born the Dominican Repub-
lic's first Jewish commun-
ity, which still proudly
exists today.

combines this rich history
with some of the loveliest
natural tourist attractions
in the entire Caribbean. Lo-
cated about 150 miles
northeast of Santo
Domingo, Sosua sits on a
crescent-shaped inlet of
faultless white beach and
clear cobalt sea. The
weather is balmy and dry
all year, the food fresh from
the sea and there are sev-
eral small hotels and cot-'
tages at amazingly low
prices.
Sosual Sol, a smart lit-
tle complex of about 25
units, has villas which
sleep 10. All water sports
are as far as the ocean it-
self and tennis and golf
are in nearby Puerto
Plata-, a few miles west.
The future promises great
things for Sosua's tourism,
but there is the faded old
synagogue, the original
marketing coop, called Pro-
ducts Sosua, and the blonde,
blue-eyed children with
names like Heinemann and
Hartnagle. - -

Chicago-Tel Aviv
El Al Service

CHICAGO — El Al will
introduce direct service be-
tween Chicago and Tel Aviv
twice weekly on Monday
and Thursday via wide-
bodied, 747 intercontinen-
tal jumbo jets, beginning
April 2.
Flights will depart
Chicago at noon, stop in
New York and then fly
non-stop to Tel Aviv arriv-
ing at 9 a.m. the following
morning.
El Al will be the only air-
line that provides direct
flights to Israel without
changing aircraft or stop-
ping in Europe.
The return flight on El Al
offers an extra bonus since
it departs Tel Aviv at mid-
night and arrives Chicago
at 9 a.m. Thus it not only
gives the passenger an
extra day in Israel, but
saves him the cost of hotel
accommodations for the
night.

In his letter Poher stated:

celebrated, I would like, Mr.
Secretary-General, to bring
again to your immediate at-

JERUSALEM — The Is-
raeli Supreme Court has
ruled that Jewish men are
not bound by the Halakha
(rabbinic law) to take a
ritual bath before morning
prayers.
The court rejected a peti-
tion that the Ministry for
Religious Affairs and the
municipality be obliged to
open the town's mikva
every morning.
The court, while agreeing
that some sages held that
any man taking a bath be-
fore prayers would be "spe-
cially blessed," decided that
