Koufax, Spitz Among Notables in 'Superstars' Book
BY HASKELL COHEN
Several of the legendary
figures covered by Litsky in
his very interesting tome
are Jewish, and Frank has
many yarns on each of
them.
On Sandy Koufax, he
tell's- about the time when
Sandy first came up as a
wild, fast young lefthan-
der. Buzzie Bavasi, then
the Brooklyn Dodger gen-
eral manager, according
to Litsky, told Koufax,
"You've got one pitch —
high." A Dodger team-
mate complained,
"Taking batting practice
against him is like playing
Russian roulette with five
bullets."
I like the story Norm
Sherry, a co-religionist of
Koufax, who was quoted by
Litsky as telling about the
time Koufax loaded the
bases with none out. Sherry

'Frank Litsky is associate
sports editor of the New
York Times and has-been
covering the sports beat
since 1946. Since that time
he has met and become per-
sonally acquainted with
many of the sports luminar-
ies who have become leg-
ends in their own time.
As a result of his contacts
and experiences with these
American sports idols, he
has written a book titled

-scenes stories of 280
great athletes, which is pub-
lished by Deribooks.

walked to the mound and
told his teammate, "If you
get behind on a batter, don't
throw your fastball. That's
when you get real wild.
Throw it easy."
Koufax took the advice
and it worked. "I will never
forget it," said Koufax.
"Then and there I realized
that there's no need to
throw as hard as I can. If I
take.it easy and throw natu-
rally, the ball goes just as
fast." Thus was born the
new Sandy Koufax.
Litsky, who culled his
material from hundreds of
sources, reveals that Sid
Luckman, the quarterback
of the great Chicago Bears
11, the dominant team in
the 1940's, was quoted by
Illinois' coach Bob Zuppke
as, "the smartest player I
ever saw, college or pro." --A
teammate, Bob Snyder, re-

Aircraft Industries and the
Israeli air force are battling
the tank-dominated high
command of the Israel De-
fense Forces over develop- .
ment of an attack helicopter
with a strong anti-tank cap-
ability, according to Avia-

The magazine said Israel
Defense- Forces Chief of
Staff Lt. Gen. Mordecai Gur
and former Deputy Chief of
Staff Israel Tal discount the
combat role of the helicop-
ter and are devoting heavy
funding to development of a
super tank instead.
This is in contrast to the
Egyptian high command,
which sees a strong attack
role for helicopters and is
expanding its present So-

with new British helicop-
