Workmen put the finishing touches on the Studebaker Lark
assembly line at the Kaiser-Ilin factory in Haifa. Israel's indus-
trial output is growing rapidly with the assistance of funds
provided through the State of Israel Bond drive. From an
annual figure of about $400,000,000 in 1951, when the Israel
Bond campaign began, total industrial production increased to
over the $1,000,000,000 mark in 1960.

TEHERAN. — A party of for-
eign correspondents in London
had been invited by the British
Overseas Airways Corporation to
take part in the first flight of its
Boeing '707 giant jets to the Iran-
ian capital. In a. majestic sweep
of little over three hours, the air-
craft crossed Cyprus into Turkey,
leaving aside Jordan, Syria and
Iraq which gre an the direct line
from Tel Aviv to Teheran, but do
not permit planes from Israel to
cross their territory.
In a flight of 31/4 hours, you
had come from ancient Judea,
where Jews had been exiled by
Babylonia," to an c i e n t Persia,
where the Empire of Cyrus the
Great had permitted them to set-
tle 2,500 years ago and had later
granted them leave to return to
their country of origin..

With the opening of the- new
international air route to Teheran
by the B.O.A.C., Iran moves near-
er to both Israel and the Western
world. The closing of this gap
opens new prospects for the in-
dustrial and agricultural develop-
ment of the country and will
make it easily accessible to
the many tourists visiting Israel
and interested in paying a call at
one of the capitals of the Near
East which; in a distant past,
played such an important role in
Jewish history. Later this year,
Iran will be celebrating the
2,500th 'anniversary of the foun-
dation of the Persian Empire by
King Cyrus the Great. For the
Jewish community of the . coun-
try, this event will offer an op-

portunity of paying their tribute
to a liberal monarch who freed
the Jews, living in Babylonian
exile, in 538 B.C. as well as to
the Shah who permitted Jewish
refugees from Poland and Iraq to
settle in the country. Jews in Iran
are looking forward to meeting
their brethren from Israel and
from the West on this occasion.
Dropping in at Teheran will be
a great experience to many of
them. It will also offer an occa-
sion for an exchange of views on
Jewish communal life and the
conduct of Jewish affairs in our
times which, let it be hoped, Jew-
ish communal leaders in Israel
and the Western world will not
miss.

The Sephardic pronunciation
of Hebrew is different than the
Ashkenazic. Some claim that the
Sephardic pronunciation is the
original one while the Ash-
kenazic pronunciation developed
later under the influence of West
European environment. Others
believe that the differences in
pronunciation stem from the two
different cultures that developed
simultaneously from Palestine
and Babylonia. Still others claim
that the so-called Sephardic
pronunciation is. a development
of the Jewish community in
Spain, while the Ashkenazic
pronunciation was the original
from Palestine. Whatever theory
is accepted, it is quite clear that
the two Jewries had a different
development since the destruc-
tion of the Temple and it should,
therefore, not be surprising to
find their pronunciation of the
Hebrew language affected by the
particular environment through
which they traveled.
