Bonds Establish Plant
for Pharmaceuticals

Following closely in the foot-
steps of his grandmother, whose
investments and philanthropies
played a vital role in the early
days of Jewish settlement in Pal-
estine, Baron Edmond de Roths-
child, president of the Israel
Bond Organization in Europe,
this week opened a new chemical
plant in Israel at Natanya.
The- new factory, known as
"Plantex", was built with the aid
of . the Israel Development Budg-
et, of which Israel Bond funds
constitute more than one-third.
There were substantial invest-
ments by the Rothschild family.
The "Plantex" factory will pro-
duce plant and herb extracts for
use in medicine, poultry nutrition
and insecticides, as well as fine
chemicals and synthetics for phar-
maceutical use. It is anticipated
that initial annual turnover of the
plant will amount to $1,000,000
or more, with 95 percent of the
production slated for the export
market.

Jews are employed in low-level

obtained these jobs through our
office."
Sydney M. Harris, national
chairman of the Canadian Jew- -
ish Congress—Bnai Brith Pub-
lic Relations Committee, told
of a case in which a bank in
Victoria refused employment to
a Jew four years ago. In that
instance, said Harris, the bank's
home office sent letters to all
its branch managers, warning
them that the institution's per-
sonnel policy was non-discrimi-
natory. But the committee has
"always been given the impres-
sion," Harris said, that an anti-
Jewish discriminatory policy
existed in the chartered banks.

Nazi Camp Boss
`Bathed' Inmates

FRANKFURT, (JTA)—A wit-
ness in the trial of Karl Chmiel-
ewski, former Nazi SS officer'
and commandant of the Gusen
concentration camp, testified that
Gusen camp inmates, chosen as
"unnecessary eaters" by Chmiel-
ewski, were "bathed to death" in
sub-freezing temperkures while
the camp commander "watched
with satisfaction."
The witness, Franz Cihal, who
was a prisoner at Gusen from
1939 to 1945, said that he saw
ill-looking inmates selected by
Chmielewski "bathed" by SS
men for 20 to 30 minutes in the
winter of 1940, a treatment
which resulted in the deaths of
90 percent of the victims.
