Faith in Biblical Accuracy
Rewards Dr. Nelson Glueck
By NORMAN LEBON
Twenty years ago, many
Biblical scholars thought that
King Solomon's mines were a
figment of the Bible's imagina-
tion. But not Dr. Nelson
Glueck, president of Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute
of Religion and famed Near
East archaeologist.
Dr. Glueck says that all he
did was have faith in the
Bible's historical accuracy,
make marks on a map indi-
cating all Biblical references
to the location of copper
mines and crafts and when a
pattern had emerged—just go
there and uncover it.
Others are not so reserved in
speaking of Dr. Glueck's dis-
coveries, which have been
hailed as great contributions to
Biblical scholarship and to the
development of the copper in-
dustry in modern Israel. On
the site where thousands of
years ago copper was mined
by workers of King Solomon,
technologists and mining engi-
neers have since descended
and are now profitably extract-
ing ore from land that was sup-
posed by all to be deficient in
the metal.
Speaking at the fourth of the
current series of Walter and
Lea Field lecture series in the
Rackham auditorium on
Wednesday, Dr. Glueck de-
scribed the results of some of
his excavations in the Negev.
A color film, "The Wilderness
of Zin„" was shown, which de-
picted the labor and searching
involved in the expeditions of
Dr. Glueck's which resulted in
some of the most significant
historical finds ever made in
the Holy Land.
Perhaps Dr. Glueck's most
important find was a signet
ring bearing the seal of Joth-
am—the first signet ring of a
Judaen king ever found any-
, where. He also located a
balance weight bearing the
name of Barachiah which
fixed its era between the sev-

The weight was accurate
to within eleven one-hun-
dredths of a gram of its
marked weight.
Though, according to Dr.
Glueck, the Bible is not essen-
tially a history book, he be-
lieves in its historical accuracy
absolutely. He has yet to find
an historically unreliable state-
ment in the Bible. But he em-
phasizes that the Bible's im-
portance. and sacredness is in-
dependent of its historical
truths. • It is essentially a theo-
logical, .moral and ethical docu-
ment and those who use the
hiStOrical accuracy of the Bible
as proof of its Value are men
"of little faith."
• In connection with the dis-
covery of the- mines of King
Solomon, Dr. Glueck also set
out to uncover the location of
the port city of. Ezion Geber.
Using descriptions contained in
the Bible, he began -hiS search.
"I . knew where it had to be,
and sure enough, in the area I
found thousands of pottery
fragments" which told the story
in terms the archeologists
love. According to Dr. Glueck,
pottery and potsherds are an
extremely accurate method of
dating and identifying cultures.
Eilat was the port city
from which King Soloman
had sent out his merchant
ships.
By tracing current Bedouin
routes in the desert he has lo-
cated underneath them the an-
cient trails used by the patri-
archs and by Moses in the Exo-
dus. He has also searched out
all traces of water in the desert,
with the premise that where
there was water there were
people. In this manner, in lo-
cating old wells, almost dried-
up streams and even ancient
cisterns, he has uncovered evi-
dences of cultures that date
back to the dawn of civilization
in the area.
After all this, when Dr.
Glueck looks at the faces of
modern Israelis hewing out
the land of their ancestors, it
is like "peering into the
faces of the ancient
prophets."
The lecture will be broad-
cast on Wayne State University
FM station WDET (101.9 mega-
cycles) at 7 p.m., Feb. 19.
Dr. Abram Spiro, chairman
of the Semitic Languages and
Literature Department at Wayne
State University and head of
the Field Lecture Series com-
mittee, introduced Dr. Richard
C. Hertz, who presented Dr.
Glueck, a former teacher of
Dr. Hertz at HUC-JIR.
Following the lecture, Dr.
Glueck autographed copies of
his new book, "Rivers in the
Desert" (reviewed in last
week's Jewish News).
Khrushchev Upbraids
Nasser for Comments
NEW YORK (AJP) — Soviet
Premier Khrushchev has up-
braided Egyptian Premier Nas-
ser and other United Arab
Republic leaders for putting
term "Communism" on the
same level as "Zionism," it
was reported from Moscow by
Times correspondent Max
Frankel.
"It is well known that Com-
munists, including those in Is-
rael, carry on a fight against
Zionism," Frankel reported
Khrushchev as having declared
at the 21st Soviet Communist
Party Congress.
"Mr. Khrushchev said it was
`incorrect' to describe Middle
Eastern Communists as work-
ing against the interests of the
Arab peoples," Frankel added,
"and that it was 'naive' to put
Communism 'on the same level
as Zionism'."

Report Indonesian Jewry Cut to Tenth
A recent report received by
the World Jewish Congress in
New York reveals that in just
over a decade . the 2,000-menther
Jewish community of Indonesia
has dwindled to less than 200.
Migration . to a number of
countries—Israel, Holland, Aus-
tralia and other lands—is - the
main cause of the decrease.
In a report to Dr. I. Schwartz-
bart, director of WJC's organ-
ization Department, the remants
of the Indonesian community
state that they number only 25
in Jakarta, the capital, but that
there are about 150 in Surabaja.
The Jakarta Community Coun-
cil, reduced to two members —
Harry Sternfeld who is chair-
man and Isaac Khazam, secre-
tary-treasurer — is trying to
merge with the Surabaja com-
munity.
While Jakarta is completely
bereft of any organized Jewish
religious life, Surabaja has a
synagogue where services are
regularly conducted by laymen.
Apart from the communities
in Jakarta and Surabaja, there
are 10 Jews in Bandung and
about the same number scat-
tered in other centers.
The report to the World Jew-
ish Congress indicates that the
community will be still further
reduced by migration in the not
too distant future. .; •
