Joachim Wach, author of
"The Comparative Study of Re-
ligions," published by Columbia
University Press (2960 B'way,
N. Y. 27), was a great-grandson
of Felix Mendelssohn-Barthol-
dy and a descendant of Moses
Mendelssohn. He died in 1956,
while his book was being com-
pleted, and his sister, Frau
Susi Heigl-Wach and Prof. Jos-
eph M. Kitagawa, who wrote
the introduction to this volume
and a biographical sketch of the
late Prof. Wach, retaining the
style and content of the book
intended for it by the departed
author, • completed it.
Dr. Kitagawa states that "the
Occidental concept of man, in
Wach's view, was decidedly
conditioned by Plato's doctrine
of the human soul and by Aris-
totle's notion of 'experience,
which gave an empirical basis
for anthropology and psychol-
ogy. However, Plato was inter-
ested in salvation, Aristotle was
preoccupied by perfection of
life With the guidance of rea-
son. Later, Jewish and Arabic
philosophers studied Plato. . . .
It was Wach's contention that
'through the three religions of
revelation, Christianity, Judaism
and Islam, a philosophical ren-
aissance occurred in the early
Middle- Ages in the West and
East, and, with it, a renewal of
interest in the discussion of the
doctrine of man . • ."
Prof. Wach points out in his
comparative study that "Juda-
ism and Islam have tended to-
ward a radical (abstract) mono-
theism, while in Christinity the
divine has been regarded as a
dynamic unity .. ."
He emphasized that "in Juda-
ism, practically all orthodox,
conservative, and liberal Jews
have a definite and inclusive
consciousness of being one in
spite of rather deep-reaching
differences and the existence of
national variants such as pro-
and anti-Zionism. Every indi-
vidual and every congregation
of Jews has an immediate sense
of belonging to this great unit."
Prof. Wach held faculty posts
at the University of Leipszig,
Brown University and the Uni-
versity of Chicago.
