Rae Weinstein, One of Hadassah's
First Detroit Presidents, Passes

Mrs. Henry (Rae Saulson)
Weinstein, one of the first presi-
dents of Detroit Chapter of Ha-
dassah, who made her home for
the past few years in Austin,
Tex., but who lived most of her
life in Detroit, died Dec. 31 in
New York, where she was visit-
ing with her son, Sheldon Henry.
She was 76.
Her husband, who was promi-
nent in communal circles here,.
died 28 years ago.
Filneral services were held
here at Kaufman Chapel on
Sunday.
surviving her besides her son
are her daughter, Mrs. Alan
Wolfson, of San Diego, Calif.;
three grandchildren and her
brothers, Saul Saulson of De-
troit and Elconan H. Saulson of
Austin, Tex.
A pioneer in women's Zionist
activities here, Mrs. Weinstein
was a longtime member of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek and
the United Hebrew Schools.
Born in Russia, Mrs. Wein-
stein was brought to Michigan
as a child. She studied in De-
troit and made her home here
with her uncle, the late William
Saulson who was pne of Michi-
gan's venerable leaders and one
of the early presidents of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek.

Dies in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) -
Seymour Berkson, 53, publisher
of the New York Journal-
American, died here Jan. 5.
The son of immigrant parents
who came to the United States
to escape persecution in
Euroke, Berkson was born and
educated in Chicago. From his
school days, he was interested
in newspaper work and ad-
vanced through the ranks from
reporter to vice-president and
general manager of the . Inter-
national News Service before
being named publisher of the
New York newspaper.
Active in civic affairs, Berk-
son last year served as chair-
man of the newspaper commit-
tee for Brotherhood Week, the
national observance sponsored
by the National Conference of
Christians- and Jews. .

Octavus Roy Cohen Dies
Octavus Roy Cohen, one of
the best known shOrt story writ-
ers whose topics mainly were
about the South and whose
characters were often Negroes,
died Tuesday in Los Angeles at
the age of 67.

Rabbi Moses Shatzkes, 79,
professor of Talmud and mem-
ber of the ordination board at
Yeshiva University's Rabbi
Isaac E l c h a n a n Theological
Seminary since 1941, died of

Builder Israel Samit
Dies on Holy Land Visit

Detroit builder Israel Samit
died suddenly Dec. 24 while on
a visit to Israel. Service's were
held here last Sunday, at the
Ira Kaufman Chapel.
Mr. Samit, of 20550 Green-
view, was the owner of a build-
ing company which bore his
name. He had been a Detroit
resident since 1912.
He leaves his wife, Anna;
four daughters, Mrs. Alex Sam-
uels, Mrs. George Friedman,
Mrs. Louis Droz and. Mrs. Wil-
liam Hoffman; nine grandchil-
dren and two great grandchil-
dren.

Foodland Executive,
Martin Feldman, Dies

Martin Feldman, a vice-pres-
ident of Foodland, Inc., died
Jan. 3 He had resided at 18974
Coyle.
Born in Hungary, Mr. Feld-
man had been a Detroit resident
for 25 years. He was a member
of Cong. Bnai Moshe, Rabbi
Mandel M. Zager L o d g e of
Bnai Brith and the Allied Food
Club.
He leaves his wife, Faye; two
sons, Gerald M. and -Kenneth
J.; a daughter, Karen S.; his
father, Morris; four brothers,
two sisters and two grand-
children.

Benjamin D. Jaffe Dies

Benjamin D. Jaffe, 52, of
19720 Cranbrook Dr., for 30
year a practicing attorney here,
died suddenly Monday.
Funeral services were held at
Kaufman Chapel Wednesday.
Surviving him are his wife,
Ann; a son, Ira J.; a daughter,
Mrs. Marvin Siegel; a grandson
and a sister, Ruth V. Jaffe.
The deceased was active on
committees of the Michigan Dar
Association. He was an instruc-
tor in' the Walsh Institute of
Accountancy.
