Red Step Up Propaganda Drive
Against. Israel in Fantasy of Lies

MUNICH (JTA)—A- fantastic
attack on Israel, charging that
the Jewish state is playing a
double game with regard to
relations between the United
States and the Arabs—under
instructions from Washington
—was made in a radio broad-
cast from Moscow monitored
here.
The broadcast said:
"It is known that the Israeli
militarists always resorted to
maneuvers, plots and intrigues
against the Arabs whenever the
Western Powers engage in such
activities. Israel was the first
to start the Anglo-French ag-
gression against Egypt. Our lis:
teners may remember the in-
crease in Israeli activities along
the Syrian border during Hen-
derson's visit last summer,
when the United States attempt-
ed to strangle Syria.
"You must remember also
how Israel publicity threatened
Jordan at the time when the
American and British occupiers
had to withdraw from Arab ter-
ritory. The Israeli militarists at
that time were trying to assist
the West in their threats to post-
pone the withdrawal of the
American and British forces
from Lebanon and Jordan.
"Bearing all this in mind, one
may be surprised at the new
campaign of threats by Israel
which is being launched at the
very same time the U.S. author-
ities and the U.S. press are
shouting loudly about a so-
called improvement in rela-
tions between the United States
and the United Arab Republic.
This surprise soon disappears
knowing that United States,
with deceiving smiles to the
Arabs, seeks to destroy Arab
unity.
"At the same time, it is pur-
suing a policy of force. Washing-
ton has concluded bilateral
military treaties with the neigh-
bors of the Arabs—Turkey, Iran
and Pakistan—in the hope of
surrounding the Arabs with its
allies. Is it not true that Wash-
ington is encouraging Israel now
in the hope that the Arabs, who,
under pressure brought to bear
on them from all sides, may be
forced to change their conduct
toward the United States.

Says Israel Criticizing
West at U.S. Orders
"Now that the U.S. authorities
are pretending friendship with

the Arabs, the Israeli leaders
have started to criticize the
West, at the orders of the Unit-
ed States. It is pointed out that
if Israel attacks the United
States and other Western Pow-
ers, the Arabs would easily be-
lieve the American claims about
so-called friendship, and thus
would fall in the trap of Ameri-
can intrigues.

"Moshe DaVan, the former
commander of the Israeli army,
was the first to speak so seri-
ously that it makes one laugh.
He said that the honeymoon
which brought Israel and the
West together might be short.
The falsehood of this statement
is obvious from the fact that
Israel cannot live without the
financial aid of the West, and
primarily the United States.

"High officials of the Israeli
Foreign Ministry furthered this
farce, which they are acting
out in U.S. interests, at a recent
meeting. These officials pointed
out—while unable to control
their laughter—that Washington
was committing an error in mak-
ing advances toward the United
Arab Republic. Nevertheless,
the fact remains that the tem-
porary U.S. demarche toward
the Arabs pleases the Israeli
statesmen, who hope to restrain
the hands -of the Arabs in all
important questions through
the United States.

Golda Meir Assails Moscow
for Lies About Israel
JERUSALEM (JTA)—When
Moscow begins telling the truth
about Israel, it will have taken
a considerable step toward bet-
ter relations between the two
states, Foreign Minister Golda
Meir declared in a newspaper
interview.
Current attacks on Israel in
the Soviet press and on the Mos-
cow radio are hurting chances
for improved relations, Mrs.
Meir said.
Asked to comment on reports
of improved relations between
Washington and Cairo, Mrs.
Meir said she was not accepting
the reports as fact. She added
that though there might be
some confusion in certain cir-
cles about President Nasser's
true nature, there was no ques-
tion about his intention of tak-
ing over the Middle East and
expanding into Africa.

ROME (JTA) — Italian Pre-
mier Amintore Fanfani con-
ferred with Israel Ambassador
Eliahu Sasson prior to the
departure this week for a four-
day trip to Egypt as a guest of
the government of President
Nasser.
Between his arrival in Cairo
on Jan. 6 and his scheduled de-
parture tonight, the Premier is
expected to meet several times
with President Nasser, to sign
an agreement for cultural ex-
changes between Italy and the
United Arab Republic and to
participate in public ceremonies.
Pietro Nenni, left-wing Social-
ist leader, in a statement hailing
the mission, declared that there
was "room" for Italy as well as
all powers large and small in
the affairs of the Middle East
and Africa.
(In Jerusalem, Israeli offi-
cials declined to comment on
the fact that Italy's Prime Minis-
ter, Amintore Fanfani will re-
turn home without going to
Israel. It is understood that
Israeli circles are not happy
with that decision, nor with the
fact that World Bank President
Eugene R. Black, who is now
visiting Cairo, also will bypass
this country. Both Fanfani and
Black had been scheduled to
come to Israel.)

Who Were
the Horites?

Translation of Hebrew Column
Pulished by Brit Ivrit Olamit

The interest in archaeology
in Israel considerably ex-
ceeds that in other countries.
And perhaps the reason for it
is that archaeology brings to
life the ancient past of the
O country and the Bible.
For several years now ar-
II chaeological excavations have
been carried on near Beer-
sheba. The purpose of the ex-
cavations is to discover who
were the ancient inhabitants
of the land of the Negev, how
they lived and from what they
earned their livelihood.
And behold the archaeolo-
gists uncovered in this dis-
trict six villages in which
people lived about five thou-
sand years ago. These ancient
inhabitants of the Negev lived
in houses underneath the sur-
face (face) of the earth.
These are not ordinary caves,
but actual houses which were
dug in the ground..
The scholars (researchers)
think that these are the Hor-
ites—a nation mentioned in
the Bible, about whom we
knew nothing until now. The
Horites engaged in agricul-
ture. In their houses were
found tools of copper and
wood, and statues of bone and
ivory (e lephant's tooth)
which surpass in beauty sim-
ilar articles which were found
in Babylon and in Egypt.
These interesting excava-
tions attract archaeologists
from many countries and also
amateur archaeologists from
the Negev settlements, who
wish to know who preceded
them in living and working in
this region of the country.

ZOA President Charges Israel with
Failure to Encourage Aliyah

NEW YORK (JTA)—Abra-
ham A. Redelheim, president
of the Zionist Organization of
America, told a press confer-
ence that "if there are today
no more than several thousand
American residents in Israel,
it is due rather to the discour-
agement of such immigration
through the failure by Israel
authorities to create the condi-
tions which would facilitate
such settlement of Americans
and Canadians."
The ZOA president urged
that Israel's immigration con-
cepts should be "changed and
adapted, at least in part, to
the Western standards of pres-
ent-day pioneering."
He appealed to the leader-
ship of Israel to help remove
"all misunderstandings and
misconceptions which have
arisen in relation to the issue

Bishop Testifies
Against Ex-Nazi

BONN (JTA) — A Roman
Catholic Bishop who, in 1941,
had been a prisoner in Sach-
senhausen concentration camp,
testified at the trial of William
Schubert, who was an SS
officer in the camp, telling of
witnessing atrocities committed
by Schubert.
Until now, Schubert has been
most contemptuous against all
witnesses. Usually wearing a
grin as witness after witness
told of his atrocities, he has
often interrupted testimony,
yelling "liar" or "Jew con-
spirator" at the witnesses.
Bishop Johannes Neuhausler
had been assigned by the
Raman Catholic Church the
task of reporting, under the
Nazi regime, about Nazi activi-
ties against his church. He
said he was sending his reports
to the German Episcopate and
to the Vatican. In 1941, he was
arrested and sent to Sachsen-
hausen.
"I saw this man," the Bishop
said, pointing to Schubert,
"mistreating two Jewish prison-
ers. I saw him beat these two
men to the ground. He hit
them with a wooden shoe."
Schubert sat tight-lipped and
grim when he heard this tes-
timony, refusing to comment
after the Bishop had testified.
Just before the clergyman
took the stand, Schubert made
one slight admission. He stated:
"I only touched prisoners with
my bare hands. Occasionally,
I slapped their faces."

of pioneer immigration from
America to Israel and which
have. plagued the relationship
between the Zionist movement
and members of the Israel
government."
Redelheim voiced the view
that the encouragement and
assistance of American aliyah
to Israel is one of the central
tasks of the Zionist movement.
However, he emphasized that
there are two equally major
requisites for the successful
promotion of such aliyah.
He cited these as the avail-
ability in Israel of adequate
housing for the accommoda-
tion of American settlers and
the creation in this country of
a climate to make aliyah an
ideal of self-enrichment rather
than an avenue of escape from
anti-Semitism and diserimina-
tion.
The ZOA president also took
issue with a statement made in
New York by Shimon Peres,
director general of Israel's De-
fense Ministry, criticizing the
Zionist movement in the
United States and declaring
that he feels that the United
Jewish Appeal has replaced the
Zionist movement in this coun-
try and has become the back-
bone of American Jewish rela-
tions with Israel.

Histadrut Ivrit Opens
$500,000 Fund Drive

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
28th annual convention of the
Histadrut Ivrit, the organization
which promotes Hebrew culture
in the United States, concluded
with the proclaiming of a $500,-
000 fund drive to finance the
dissemination of Hebrew cul-
ture in this country.
The convention also adopted
a resolution calling upon the
Soviet government to permit
Jews in the Soviet Union to
study Hebrew. Another resolu-
tion expressed thanks to the
Jewish Agency for giving moral
and financial support to the or-
ganization.
Addressing the convention,
Dr. Emanuel Neumann, member
of the agency executive, ap-
pealed to Jewish communities
throughout the country to al-
locate more funds for Jewish
education.
He said that the Jewish federa-
tions and welfare funds in this
country are"proportionally al-
locating far too many millions
of dollars for eleemosynary in-
stitutions and 'defense agencies'
and too little for cultural acti-
vities and Hebrew education."
