Oscar Straus, who was a mem-

Roosevelt's administration and,
before that, Minister to Turke y ,
upon his return from Turke
one summer, made a reservatioi
at a swank resort at Lake Pla

In the case of Oscar Strau
however, the hotel feared t
scandal and accepted Straus, bu t
decided to make it so plain t
him that he was not wanted
that he would not attempt - t
return.
At the end of his stay at th
hotel, Straus was given his bil

ed double the usual rate. Th
charge for his horse was als
doubled. (It was in the day 3
before the automobile.)
Straus wen'; to see the man -

understand why you charge m
double, but why do you .charg
my horse double? My horse isn'
a Jew."

"All-Inclusive"
This story is credited to Davi t l
Dainow, South African writer
who related it in the South Af -
rican Zionist Record:
High rents exist throughou t
Israel these days. Even some
the olim who bring money to Is-
rael find it difficult to acquire
rooms in central Tel-Aviv.
Recently, one of these new ar-
rivals enquired of a German-
speaking owner the monthly ccs l
of a single room in her four
roomed flat. She replied : "Twen-
ty-five pounds."
The enquirer was shocked al
the high price, demanded and
exclaimed, "Efo Hazedek and efe
Hayosher?" (Where is the justice
and where is the fairness?)
To which the lady replied: "Al

les Inelusiv."

Butcher Shop Tale: Mrs. Co
hen walked into a Kosher butch
er shop, and asked the price o
flanken.
"It's $.97 a pound," said the
butcher.
"But," protested Mrs. Cohen,
"I can get it for $.93 a pound
at the store down the street."
The butcher asked, "Then why
don't you get it there?"
"Because," she replied, "he's
all out of it."
"Then, my dear woman," ad-
vised the butcher, "I give you
my word of honor that when

`No Water' for Rabbi

A rabbi in Hollywood is sick
to death of the socials and
cocktail parties he is expected
to attend almost every other
evening. At one of them, he en-
tered wearily, glanced sourly at
the over-familiar cast of char-
acters, and sank into the nearest
chair. The hostess asked coyly,
"A spot of tea, Rabbi?" "No tea,"
he growled. "Coffee, Rabbi?"
"No coffee." An understanding
woman, she whispered in his ear,
"Scotch and water, Rabbi?"
Said the rabbi, brightening, "No
water."

Partner Plays Safe

M y r on Cohen, dialectician,
tells this yarn about the two
dress manufacturers who were
partners but hated each other.
They were dining at a swank
eatery and discussing a very
important deal. Both ordered
steaks.
As soon the the food was
served, one partner cut off a
piece of steak, deposited it in a
napkin and put it in his pocket.
Then he finished his steak.
The headwaiter noticed this
and asked, "Howcum?"
"It's this way"—was the ex-
planation. "My partner hates
me. I know he wanted me to
choke on the first bite—so I
fooled him!"

One of producer Sam Gold-
wyn's employees became a proud
father. "What did you name
your son?" inquired Goldwyn.
"Abe" replied the employee.
"Why did you name him Abe?"
asked Goldwyn. "Every Tom,
Dick and Harry is named Abe!"
