Community Groups Plan Hanukah Activities

Feast of Lights Celebrated with
Religious, Educational Social Events

Hanukah, the festival of lights,
will be observed this coming
week from Sunday, Dec. 23 to
Sunday, Dec. 30, The community
is busy planning suitable cele-
brations for this holiday, which
is traditionally observed relig-
iously, educationally and Social-
ly. Following is a list of activities
scheduled:

Religious Observances

At Cong. Ahavas Achim, at
late Friday services, Rabbi Eph-
raim F. Einhorn will preach on
"What Does Christmas Mean to
Us?" Mrs. Alex Kraft will recite
the invocation, and the choir
will sing Hebrew songs. An oneg
shabbat follows services. At 9
a.m., Saturday, Rabbi Einhorn.
will speak on "Jealousy — t h e
Curse of Mankind."
Adas Shalom Synagogue
At. Saturday morning services,
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal will preach
on "History Opens a Door," and
Cantor • Nicholas Fenakel will
chant the service.
Cong. Beth Aaron
At late Friday services, Rabbi
Benjamin H. Gorrelick will speak
on "The Why and How of Mod-
ern Hanukah Celebration." Max
Kaminsky will act as Cantor,
and Sheldon Seltzer will chant
the kiddush. Mr. and Mrs.
Abraham Panush will host a soc-
ial hour following services, at
which Mrs. Gorrelick will lead
community singing.
A Hanukah celebration will be
held at 8:15 p.m., Wednesday, in
the synagogue. Cantor Hyman
Schulsinger will be guest artist,
and Rabbi Gorrelick will deliver
a Hanukah address. Mrs. Irwin
Levine, of the Sisterhood, will
present a $5,000 check at this
time toward the building fund.
Temple Israel
"Rededication" is the subject
of Rabbi Leon Fram at services
at 8:30 p.m., today. This Han-
ukah sermon will salute the state
of Israel and the dedication of
the new Zionist House. Lawrence
Snider will observe his Bar Mitz-
vah.
Temple Beth El
A Pre-Hanukah family service
will be -held at 8 p.m., today, at
which Dr. B. Benedict Glazer
and Rabbi Sidney Akselrad will
preach. In honor of Rabbi Aksel-
rad, who leaves to assume rab-
binical duties in Berkeley, Calif.
on Jan. 1, a reception will be
tendered following services. The
annual Hanukah supper will be
held at 6 p.m., Sunday, in the
Franklin Hall.
Cong. Adas Yeshurun
At Saturday morning services,
Rabbi Leo Goldma;n will preach
on "And Jacob Dreamed a
Dream."
Cong. Bnai Moshe
"Living in Three Tenses" is the
subject of Rabbi Moses Lehr-
man's late Friday sermon, at
8:15 p.m., today. The junior Con-
gregation will sponsor and par-
ticipate in the service.
Cong. Bnai David
At Sabbath morning services,
Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka will
preach on "Joseph in an Egyp-
tian Environment." Cantor Hy-
man Adler will chant the serv-
- ices. The Bar Mitzvah of Daniel
D. Feinberg will be observed.
Rabbi Sperka will be heard at
10:30 a.m., on Dec. 30, over sta-
tion WJR in a program designed
to acquaint Detroiters with the
meaning of Hanukah. His
topic will be "The Power of an
Ideal."
Cong. Shaarey Zedek
Rabbi Morris Adler will speak
on "A Recipe for Victory," a
Hanukah message, at Saturday
services. Cantor Jacob H. Son-
enklar and the choir directed by

services.
Cong. Beth Abraham
At Saturday services, Rabbi
Israel I. Halpern will preach on
"Doing While Waiting."
Cong. Gemiluth Chassodim
Rabbi Leo Neuhaus will offi-
ciate at Sabbath services, and
on Sunday will deliver an "Ad-
dress to Youth," at special cere-
monies.
N'shei Agudath Israel -
Rabbi Joseph Elias, Yeshivah
principal, will be guest speaker
at the Hanukah celebration at 9
p.m., Saturday, at Agudath Is-
rael Synagogue, 11331 Linwood.
His topic will be "American Re-
ligious Education Under Modern
Conditions."

Educational Programs

At a Hanutah pr o g r am of
Bnai David religious school on
Sunday, at the synagogue, Mrs.
David J. Cohen, Frank Lieder-
man and Leonard Servetter of
the teaching staff will direct fes-
tivities. About 70 students will
participate, and will hear talks
by Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka and
Rabbi Eric Greenbaum. Cantor
Hyman Adler will lead the musi-
cal program.
At Bnai David Boy's Club min-
ion on Sunday, Rabbi Sperka
will speak on "The Meaningful-
ness of Hanukah." On Thursday
evening, a joint Hanukah party
will be held by the Sisterhood
and Men's Club.
Ahavas Achim School
At 5:30 p.m., Sunday, a Han-
ukah party for children will be
given by the Sisterhood and
Men's Club. Religious school
pupils will light the candles and
present a play. Rabbi Ephraim
F. Einhorn will speak. The Mac-
cabi Youth Club of the congre-
gation will hold a social meeting
at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday.
