Making Inroads
In the Home
Through Schools
By ALBERT ELAZAR
One of the important develop-
ments in the field of Jewish ed-
ucation in recent years has been
the intensification of home and
school relations.
No matter how successful the
school may be, if its teachings
are not carried over into the
daily practice of the home, it
can hardly have the influence
on the child for which the school
strives.
We, in the United Hebrew
SchOols, have made inroads in
the direction of parent-school
relationships. One of the means
of reaching parents has been the
formation of P a r e n t - Teach-
ers Organizations in each- of the
branches. At their respective
meetings, each group has the
opportunity to discuss with their
staff the problems confronting
their particular branch. At
these meetings, parents have also
been taught the songs which
their children sing, backgrounds
of holidays are presented and
discussed, and suggestions of the
holiday celebrations in the
homes have been elaborated up-
on. One of the main projects
has been the parent workshops,
at which parents are not
preached to, but actually partic-
ipate in making various home
decorations, learning the back-
ground, songs, brochos, and all
that makes for an enjoyable and
inspiring home celebration holi-
day. Mothers join with the staff
in planning and setting up the
workshop. As a result, a num-
ber of original ideas have come
from some mothers to be used
by others attending the work-
shop.
The success of the Hanukah
Workshop has stimulated the
parents to find out how to cele-
brate other festivals. Plans are
now under way for a Passover
Workshop, which will help the
mothers make the seder more
meaningful and inspiring.
The conception of Bar Mitzvah
has also been a sore spot in
Jewish Education. Bar Mitzvah,
which was meant to be the be-
ginning of greater efforts on be-
half of Jewish learning, has be-
come merely a means to an end,
and for many a boy and his par-
ents has spelled the end of for-
mal Jewish education. Realiz-
ing that little could be done with
the child alone, and understand-
ing that the parents misconcep-
tion of the meaning of Bar Mitz-
vah has been part of the "lost
generation" • attitude, efforts to
re-interpret the meaning of Bar
Mitzvah has been made. Par-
ents of all 12-year-olds are being
invited to discuss with the staff
the aims of Bar Mitzvah and an
attempt is made to impress the
parents with the necessity of
having their child continue
studies.
In all these attempts, the re-
sponse of the mothers in partic-
ular has been gratifying. Some
have actually joined , formal
classes to stimulate in their
children a desire to continue
their Jewish education.
It is one thing to give the child
a feeling of pride in his heritage
and yet another to give the child .
an opportunity to actively ex-
press that heritage in his daily
living. With the cooperation of
the parents, we hope to accom-
plish these goals.

Charity on Hanukah
No one shOuld fast on Hanu-
kah nor on the day preceding the
feast nor on the day following.
The feasting is not considered
unless it is accompanied by songs
and praises. "Charity should be
liberally dispensed on Hanukah,
for it is instrumental in mend-
ing the flaws of one's soul, when
dispensed to those who are poor
and study the Torah in order to
maintain them," says the Schul-
chan Aruch."

LONDON, (JTA) — A re-
port that "King Solomon's
mines have been discovered
in Southern Israel" is pub-
lished in the News-Chronicle.
The report says that the
existence of copper and iron
ore underground has been
proven by geological research
secretly conducted in two
spots.
"In one spot," the paper
reports, "gold has been found
which even Kin g Solomon
failed to find when he looked
for it nearly 3,000 years ago.
A decision of the Israel Cabi-
net is expected shortly which
will launch mining operations
to explain what may be fabu-
lous discoveries."
