Israel Trip an Eye-Opener

Isaacs Tells of New State's
Needs, High Education Level

By BERNARD ISAACS

Superintendent, United

Hebrew Schools

Israel is passing through a
period of severe crisis, the causes
of which are many. Pointing to
some of them, we enumerate:
1. Last year's drought. the
first time in many years rain fell
so scantily.
2. The economic boycott of
the Arab countries.
3. The maintenance of an
Army, Navy and Air Force.
4. Probably the most import-
ant, the influx of ohm (new-
comers).
Over 200,000 newcomers were
absorbed in Israel last year, and
in spite of drastic limitations
(e.g.—the order that young ohm
be drafted for work in agricul-
tural settlements), the number
will not be much below 2. 00,000
again this year.

The crisis is severe, but not
critical. Food and essential
commodities are rationed and
are spread as far as possible
over the entire population.
Naturally, priorities are given
to children, aged people, -the
sick, men and women in
uniorm, but there is no i:-
criMina-tion otherwise. Each
newcomer landing in !',.s_ael
receives a ration card imme-
diately entitling him to the
.s a m e commodities as any
Israeli.

BARTON'S

The tourist who comes to
Israel without such prepara-
tion generally returns home
disappointed. Not knowing the
language he misses the mirac-
ulous achievements—he misses
talking to the Israeli man in
the street—and, as a result,
misses the spirit that is Israel.

The United Hebrew., Schools,
an agency of the Jewish Welfare
Federation,. is a system of
schools designed to accommo-
date all people—youngsters in
its daily afternoon classes, ad-
vanced students in its Midrasha,
College of Jewish Studies, men
and women in its special adult
classes.
Let us, using the link of edu-
cation, connect ourselves more
closely with Israel and thus be-
come more conscious of our duty
to our brethren builders in our
infant country across the waters.

Seeks New Life in U. S.

Here to begin a new life and
to locate her only living rela-
tives, newcomer Alice Katz, 23,

the port of entry under the aus-

the dreaded

centration camp
Alice Katz
Her parents and
two brothers were killed during
the war. Her father, Herman,
had told her that his three
brothers were living in the Unit-
ed States, but she does not know
their addresses. Miss Katz will
be aided by the Location and
Search Division of United Serv-
ice, which receives its funds
from the United Jewish Appeal.

The economic burden is borne
mostly by the housewife, whose
unhappy chore is to stand in
line, sometimes for hours, to re-
ceive food for her family. Very
often, after waiting for a consid-
erable period, she is told, "that
is all for today."
What can we, as American
Jews, do to help the loyal Israeli,
who shares his morsel of bread
willingly and who gives gen-
uinely until it- really hurts?
In my opinion there are two
ways: first, financial assistance
through the United Jewish Ap-
peal, correlated in our own city
through the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, and through the liberal
purchase of bonds for Israel.
Secondly, there is education—
Jewish education.
Many individuals who have
relatives and friends in Israel
are sending packages or food
certificates. This, in itself, is a
good—a great—deed.
