Pioneering and Romance
Israel Pioneers, Hayyim Zeldis,
Can Western Honeymoon Malkah Brightman, Married Here
This is more than a wedding
story: it is a tale of adventure
and pioneering by two young
Detroiters who have chosen to
help in Israel's upbuilding and
are in Detroit on a brief stay—
marriage, honeymoon and then
the return trip to the Jewish
state.
The young heroes are Hayyim
(Hiram) Zeldis,. son of Mr. and
Mrs. Si Zeldis, and Malkah (Mil-
dred) Brightman, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Brightman.
MRS. IRVING LAKER
Dr. and Mrs. Morris E. Bach-
man of Birchcrest Dr., announce
the marriage of their daughter,
Eleanor Blanche, to Irving La-
ker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry
I. Laker. The marriage was sol-
emnized June 20, at Shaarey
Zedek, with Rabbi Morris Adler
and Rabbi Leon Fram officiat-
ing.
The bride chose a gown of
ivory satin, trimmed with alen-
con lace. Her fingertip veil fell
from a bonnet of satin with
matching lace appliques. She
carried a corsage of orchids and
stephonitis.
Joan Bachman, sister of the
bride, served as maid-of-honor,
and Carole Bachman, Joan
Mitchell, Sally Ressler, Rosanne
Mitschum and Rose Wolf enson
acted as bridesmaids. Diane
Bachman, youngest sister of the
bride, was flower girl. .
Gerald Laker, brother of the
bridegroom, served as best man.
Byron Lasky, Allan Weiss, Bob
Newman, Walter Rosenberg and
the bride's cousin, Carl Warren
Orecklin, served .as ushers. Mar-
tin Laker was ring-bearer,. .
Out of town guests included
friends and relatives from New
York, Oregon, California, Chi-
cago, Wisconsin and Canada. -
The newlyweds are . touring
the Western part of the United
States and Canada. Upon their
return they will reside on . Cov-
ington Dr.
Hayyim, one-time member of
the staff of The Jewish News,
22, gave up his scholastic ca-
reer to go to Israel two years
ago. He settled in one of the
toughest spots in the land—in
Kelta in the Negev—and there
helped build a new civilization.
An able poet, author of several
short stories and a fine novel,
Hayyim believes that Israel
must be built speedily and that
American know-how and as-
sistance is important in this
task.
His sweetheart, 19-year-old
Malkah, sharing his views, went
to Israel nine months ago and
joined him and his group at
Kelta.
Both returned here on June 26
on the first flight of the Israel
El Al plane, to be married at a
ceremony at Bnai David on June
29. On the plane with them were
seven Detroiters who had com-
pleted seven months of special
leadership study at Beth Berl,
near Kfar Saba. This entire
group was among the 300 guests
at the wedding.
In less than a week's time,
the wedding plans were made by
the Brightmans and the Zeldises.
The Israel spirit permeated the
Bnai David main synagogue
during the ceremony and the
social hall during the wedding
dinner. Rabbi Joshua Sperka,
Rabbi Leo Goldman and Cantor
Nathan Adler of Windsor offi-
ciated at the ceremony. The
guests were especially thrilled
by a cable of congratulations
from Hayyim's uncle, Max
Lapides, who participated in
JDC's efforts -to bring the Yem-
enites to Israel from Aden and
recently assisted in the move-
ment of Iraqi Jews to Israel. Mr.
Lapides, who cabled his greet-
ings from Tel Aviv, informed the
