Bread Ration Cut Further in Rumania

further reduction of 20 per cent in the bread ration
for Jews in Rumania. The reduction is to go into effect
immediately. A Bucharest broadcast also announced
that "all Jewish enterprises throughout Rumania have
either been liquidated or have passed into Rumanian

LISBON (JTA)—World-wide criticism of the
Vichy regime for the merciless deportation of Jews
from unoccupied France to Nazi-held territory this
week provoked an answer from Pierre Laval, chief
of the French government, who is held responsible
for these deportations.
An article in Laval's newspaper, Le Moniteur,
believed to be written by Laval himself, warns the
leaders of the Church in France that their de-
termined opposition to the deportation of the Jews
from the country "is only harming the task of
France's recovery undertaken by Marshal Petain."
The same article warns the people of France to ab-
stain from "showing pity" for the Jews.
The British radio announced that riots followed
the dismissal by Laval of the Military Governor of
Lyons for refusing to let his troops aid in the mass-
arrests of Jel.vs in his district.

KUIBYSHEV—A harrowing account of how the
German occupation forces in the town of Velizh, in the
Vitebsk district, used machine guns, the noose and fire
to murder all but 17 of the 1,440 Jewish residents of the
village is related in a letter from one of the 17—a young
half-Jewish girl — shown to this correspondent this
week. The letter, written by Lida Grigorieva to her
father, a Red Army man at the front, tells how the
Germans drove all the Jews of the town into a ghetto
as soon as they occupied Velizh. Nine hundred of them

massacres in the ghettos of Poland which have reached
here during the last few days through neutral sources
prompted the central committee of the new Zionist Or-
ganization here to send a cable to Gen. Sikorski, Polish
Premier, urging him to do everything he can "to rescue
Polish Jewry." "'The Polish Government will do every-
thing possible for the Jews in Poland," was the immed-
iate reply from Gen. Sikorski. The Polish Government-
in-Exile is now planning the appointment of a special
minister for the Middle East with headquarters either in
Palestine or in Cairo, to take care of refugees from Po-
land now scattered all the way from Persia to Palestine.

Nazis Deny 7,000,000 Jews
The Right to Greet New Year
NEW YORK (JTA)—Seven million Temis under
Nazi rule, already the victims of a brutal war which
menaces their very existence, were denied even the
solace of practicing their religion this Rosh Hashan-
ah, as the culminating act of the Nazi campaign to ex-
terminate religion as a whole and the Jewish re-
ligion in particular.
A documented record of the Hitler attempt to
extirpate the institutions of the Jewish religion has
been published here by the Institute of Jewish Af-
fairs of which Dr. Jacob Robinson is director. The
record indicates that the war against the Jewish
religion began, in its accelerated form, on that
November night in 1938 when more than 431 syna-
gogues were destroyed in a single night in Germany
alone. Its present tempo, moving toward the goal
of total extermination, was established in September,
1939, when the Nazis launched their new attack
upon the Jewish religion during the High Holyday
services of the Jews during the invasion of Poland.
The methods and the tempo established in Poland
have now travelled to and have been dulpicated in
every country of Nazi occupation.
