Million Dollar Bond Party Defies Axis
Mammoth War Fund Drive $200,000 JDC Grant Eases
Launched by Knoliwood Club Palestine War Relief Burden

!Every Couple Attending Patriotic Banquet Oct. 12 Must Buy or Sell $1,000 Worth of
War Bonds; Campaign Already On; Irving Blumberg Is Chairman; Will be Gala
Social Event; Hollywood Celebrities, Leaders of State, Nation to be Present

The deadly stare of the Axis eyes are being defied today by a group of Detroit Jew-
ish leaders who have set out to secure the means with which to speed the destruction of
the menace to the democracies of the world.
Knollwood Country Club is providing the weapons for uninterrupted activities
;against the Axis through a decision reached this week to sponsor a Million Dollar War
;Bond Banquet, which is to be held at a downtown hotel on the night of Columbus Day,
1 Monday, Oct. 12.
Under the chairmanship of Irving W. Blumberg, who is assisted by Irving Dwor-
iman, Nathan Fishman, George S. Seyburn, Maurice Aronsson and others, the campaign
has begun to function, its slogan being:

The eyes of the Axis are upon us—we dare not fail.

t

An effective publicity campaign has been outlined by Louis Luckoff of the adver-
Using firm of Bass-Luckoff, and from now until the night of the great Million Dollar
;Banquet members of Knollwood Country Club will receive several times a week infor-
mation and stirring material to encourage their efforts for this party. The expenses in-
volved in sponsoring this million dollar drive will be covered by Knollwood.
1 The novelty of this drive is the intention of the leaders to reach the goal of $1,-
000,000 in the sale of War Bonds by Oct. 12 by requiring every couple attending the ban-
quet to buy or to sell Bonds in the amount of $1,000 or more.
"This will be a million dollar party but not a millionaire's party," Mr. Blumberg
.pointed out. "By making it possible for every one attending to assure admission to this
!great event by selling Bonds, we make it a democratically arranged affair. At the same
:time, we will put more than 200 people to work to help provide the sinews of war.
"The statement made last week by Secretary of the Treasury Morgenthau that the
War Bond campaign is a failure is a direct challenge to us. We must all begin to work
anew in defense of our position ; we must start making new sacrifices, we must recog-
nize that this is OUR fight. Let's go to it and show that each one of us can contribute
towards the defeat of the Axis."
The Jewish News has volunteered its services to act as official organ of Knollwood
Country Club for this Million Dollar War Bond Party.
There will be a charge of $3 per plate for the banquet, and members of Knollwood
are being called upon to commence their War Bond work at once.
In addition to the committee heads already mentioned, the following are assisting
in planning for the Million Dollar War Bond Banquet:
Henry S. Alper, Nathan Bonin, Sam A. Cohen, Irwin I. Cohen, Louis Davidson, Ben

Fenton, Harry N. Grossman,
; — Hamburger, Max Handler, John
Isaacs, Morrey L. Jacobs, Max
B. Kerner, Samuel G. Keywell,
Max Kogan, Lester Lapides, Jo-
seph Lasky, Milton K. Mahler,
Nathan Schayowit z, William
Tann, Robert Wisok, Charles K.
Harris and Fred F. Simmons.
The eagerness with which
t Knollwood members are looking
forward to this great event is
i demonstrated by the competitive
spirit already displayed.
From the moment the impor-
. tart task was undertaken, mem-
i bers set aside other duties and
commenced a salesmanship cam-
i paign among relatives and
!friends and among business as-
i sociates, to help reach the mil-
f lion dollar goal in the sale of
! War Bonds.
. Knollwood me mbers have
stated that they consider it a
privilege to be able to attend
this Million Dollar Banquet, and
anxiety
ef to join in this
great patriotic
pisatr ioticeffort
Interest in the undertaking is
also being aroused by the fact
that it will not only be a great
patriotic assembly, but also an
outstanding social event. Lead-
. ing Hollywood celebrities, out-
! standing men and women in the
i state and the nation, features
! without end, will mark the Co-
lumbus Day Knollwood Banquet.
"THE EYES OF THE AXIS
ARE UPON US—WE DARE NOT
;FAIL" is challenging Knollwood-
fans and their friends, and there
I -
, is every indication that the Mil-
lion Dollar Banquet will be an
I event that will add glory to the
Jewish community of Detroit.
