The Sanctity of the Sabbath
By DR. A. M. HERSHMAN
Rabbi of Congregation Shaarey Zedek
a// I keep the Sabbath, God will keep me." Abraham ibn Ezra.
—
A great truth, this. Our history fully attests it.
According to tradition, the Sabbath antedated
the Revelation on Sinai. It was instituted while our
1 forefathers were slaves in Egypt, groaning under the
yoke of tyranny. There was danger that the state of
helplessness in which they found themselves would
plunge them into a state of hopeless-
ness; that the physical slavery which
they endured would in the course of
time render them slaves in mind and
spirit as well. The Sabbath saved
them from this peril. It gave them
pause for reflection, stirred their finer
sensibilities, kept alive the glorious
memories of the past and the hope
of a coming reUemption.
Time and again has the Sabbath
achieved the same magic task. Who
Dr. A. M.
shall adequately estimate the role
Hershman
that this day has played in the maintenance of the
Jews? Recall his tragic status during a great part
of the Middle Ages. Dangers beset him on all sides.
He was the victim of relentless persecution, the par-
iah of the nations, the flotsam and jetsam of society—
defamed, degraded, and despised. Yet dire blows of
fortune did not weigh him down. He refused to
accept the estimate his enemies formed of him.

—After Picart, 1723
More than two centuries before Nazism, even in the days when the Ghetto walls separ-
ated Jews from the rest
of the world, the synagogue was the sacred tower of Israel. Above
we reproduce an engraving from Picart, made in 1723, depicting a European synagogue scene
on Yom Kippur. Contrasted with the position of Jews under Nazi role today, this illustra-
tion emphasizes the eternity of Israel and stands as a challenge to all the forces of brutality
in the world.
