The reduction is to go into effect immediately. A Bucharest broadcast also announced that "all Jewish enterprises throughout Rumania have either been liquidated or have passed into Rumanian hands." LISBON (JTA)—World-wide criticism of the Vichy regime for the merciless deportation of Jews from unoccupied France to Nazi-held territory this week provoked an answer from Pierre Laval, chief of the French government, who is held responsible for these deportations. An article in Laval's newspaper, Le Moniteur, believed to be written by Laval himself, warns the leaders of the Church in France that their de- termined opposition to the deportation of the Jews from the country "is only harming the task of France's recovery undertaken by Marshal Petain." The same article warns the people of France to ab- stain from "showing pity" for the Jews. The British radio announced that riots followed the dismissal by Laval of the Military Governor of Lyons for refusing to let his troops aid in the mass- arrests of Jel.vs in his district. Only 17 Jews Escaped Nazi Massacre KUIBYSHEV—A harrowing account of how the German occupation forces in the town of Velizh, in the Vitebsk district, used machine guns, the noose and fire to murder all but 17 of the 1,440 Jewish residents of the village is related in a letter from one of the 17—a young half-Jewish girl — shown to this correspondent this week. The letter, written by Lida Grigorieva to her father, a Red Army man at the front, tells how the Germans drove all the Jews of the town into a ghetto as soon as they occupied Velizh. Nine hundred of them Priests Arrested for Aiding Jewish Children were confined in a pigsty. When the Nazis were forced to abandon Velizh, they locked all the Jews in the pig- sty, sprayed kerosene over it and set it afire, the letter discloses. LONDON (JTA)—Fighting French headquarters here reported that Laval has ordered the arrest of a number of Catholic priests in unoccupied France charged with hiding Jewish children seeking to escape deportation to Nazi-held territory. Palestine Hears of Nazi Massacres Relief Workers Seized in Unoccupied France BERN (JTA)—The Swiss press reports that a JERUSALEM—Unverified reports of renewed Nazi number of Jewish Relief workers who were con- ducting Swiss relief work in a camp for Jewish children in unoccupied France were suddenly ar- rested by armed French gendarmes and taken to an unknown destination. The arrested persons included a Jewish doctor, M. Peters, his wife and two Jewish girls who worked as his assistants. massacres in the ghettos of Poland which have reached here during the last few days through neutral sources prompted the central committee of the new Zionist Or- ganization here to send a cable to Gen. In Democratic Countries Britain Permits Food Shipment to Poland LONDON—The first consignment of food parcels to be sent from England to Jews in Nazi-occupied Poland with the permission of the British authorities will leave London within the next fortnight. The British author- ities will permit the shipment from here of 10,000 parcels monthly to Jews in the Polish ghettos. It was stipulated that the total value of all food packages sent must not exceed $12,000. The shipments will be financed private- ly and the funds required for the next three months have already been secured. A small committee which includes Prof. Zelig Brotietsky, Dr. Ignacy Schwartz- hart, Samuel Zvgelbaum and representatives of the World Jewish Congress and the Agudas Israel, will supervise sending the parcels. Prominent Lithuanian Jews in Siberia LONDON — A number of prominent Lithuanian Jews whose whereabouts have been unknown for a longtime, are safe in Siberia to where they were evacu- ated by the Soviet authorities, according to information received by the Polish Jewish Refugee Fund here. The list includes the names of Dr. Joel Brutzkus, brother of Dr. Julius Brutzkus, and former principal of the Kaunas Hebrew Gymnasium; Dr. Benjamin Berger, chief physician of the Bikur Cholm Hospital in Kaunas and Vice-Chairman of the Zionist Central Committee in Lithuania; Boris Bernstein, General Manager of the Lithuanian Commercial Bank and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the daily "Yiddishe Stimme"; Benzion Brudni, General Manager of the Union of Jew- ish Co-operative Banks in Lithuania; Captain Breg- stein, Chairman of the Jewish War Veterans' Asso- ciation; Dr. Isaac Dubrovitch, Chairman of the Jewish State Pnrty; Dr. Leib Heshelson, Vice-Chairman of the Party; Rabbi Hojptstodt; Dr. Isaac Levitan, Chairman of the General Zionist Group A and chief of the gyne- cological department of the Kaunas Jewish Hospital, as well as three members of the Zionist Central Commit- tee, Nissan Misler, Meyer Kanterowicz, and Leon Cernes. Zion Colony Named After Huysmans LONDON—Establishment in Palestine of a settle- ment named after Camille Huysmans, Belgian Socialist leader and former president of the Belgian Chamber of Deputies, which will be colonized by demobilized Jewish veterans of the Dutch and Belgian armies, was announced at a reception to Huysmans here, sponsored by the Jewish National Fund and Haatid, the Belgian Zionist association. "Blood Bath in Rumania" NEW YORK—A documented account of the horror that has been visited upon the Jews of Rumania since the ascension to power two years ago of Marshal Ion Antonescu, was published this week by the United Ru- manian Jews of America under the title "Blood Bath in Rumania." Most of the documentary material appearing in the volume has been taken from an official report published by Antonescu Government, entitled "At the Brink of the Abyss", smuggled out of Rumania by an exiled official. Jews Compelled to Obey Nazi Laws STOCKHOLM—Pressed by the Gestapo, the Jewish Council in Amsterdam has issued a Rosh Hashanah appeal to the Jews of Holland to obey the Nazi anti- Jewish regulations emphasizing that "violation of these regulations, even when due only to carelessness or ignorance, will result in punishment of members of the Jewish Council." Deportation of 300,00 Jews Reported GENEVA—The deportation by the Nazis of 300,000 Jews from the Warsaw ghetto—about one-half of the entire Jewish population in the ghetto—was reported here this week. Jewish organizations here expressed fear for the immediate future of all the Jews in Nazi- occupied Poland in view of unconfirmed alarming in- formation reaching Switzerland that the Gestapo is de- manding the annihilation of all Jews in Poland as "ele- ments detrimental to the security of Germany's interests in Eastern Europe." Bulgaria Freezes All Jewish Assets ZURICH—Estimating the value of Jewish property in Bulgaria at 8,000,000 lewa (about $96,000,000 at pre- war rates), Dr. Alexander Beleff, Bulgarian Commis- sioner for Jewish Affairs, this week announced over the Sofia radio that all Jewish assets in the country will be placed under his jurisdiction. The funds realized from the sale of these assets, he said, will be used to create a fund to meet future requirements of Jewish charitable institutions. In his address Sir Herbert expressed the hope that "after 25 years" the Mandatory power will leave Palestine where there will be "a prosperous people, the Arab and Jewish cultures flourishing side by side." GENEVA—A petition drawing the attention of the League of Nations to the precarious position of the Jews in Hungary was submitted to the League Council, which is now in session here considering the application of Hungary for entrance into the League. It is demanded that Hungary pledge fair treatment of minorities before being admitted. NEW YORK—Max Warburg, noted Hamburg banker arrived here on board the "Resolute" in the company of his brother, Felix Warburg. In a state- ment to the press the latter, who is chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, revealed that the JDC has been helping to feed 2,000,000 .daily in Russia. Thousands of orphans are being cared for, he said. It was also announced here that 47 Jewish orphans from the Ukraine are being brought to America by the JDC where they will be reunited with relatives. A documented record of the Hitler attempt to extirpate the institutions of the Jewish religion has been published here by the Institute of Jewish Af- fairs of which Dr. Jacob Robinson is director. The record indicates that the war against the Jewish religion began, in its accelerated form, on that November night in 1938 when more than 431 syna- gogues were destroyed in a single night in Germany alone. Its present tempo, moving toward the goal of total extermination, was established in September, 1939, when the Nazis launched their new attack upon the Jewish religion during the High Holyday services of the Jews during the invasion of Poland. The methods and the tempo established in Poland have now travelled to and have been dulpicated in every country of Nazi occupation. Jacob Kreiser, Soviet commander and one of the best loved heroes of the Russian people, in an address delivered at a mass meeting at Ufa in the Bashkirian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Re- public. . Gen. Kreiser paid tribute to "the hundreds of thousands of Jewish fighters in the Red Army who, together with other Red Army men, are manifesting unprecedented examples of heroism in this patriotic war."
