We think, for instance, of the case of one of the most eminent
professors in Vienna—a man in the early fifties—who is known
to American scholars by a number of very valuable contributions
to our literature and who writes to a friend in this country that
he is actually starving. llis appeal is addressed to those who
know his work, to conic to his assistance.
But this case is only- typical of hundreds whom a similar fate
has overtaken. We are of the opinion that the Joint Distribution
Committee should make special efforts to come to the relief of
men unfitted for physical work, who like the one mentioned, have
enriched our lives by their scholarly contributions. We feel
assured that special efforts in behalf of men of this type would
meet with the whole-hearted sympathy of all who have contributed
to the Jewish War Relief Fund in this country.
