CHICAGO-The Detroit Tigers
bunched two singles, a sacrifice
and a long, run-scoring fly in the
eighth inning to edge out the pace-
setting Chicago White Sox, 3-2,
yesterday.:
The Tigers' victory, which squar-
ed the three-game series at one
each, plus New York's 2-0 win
over Washington in a night game,
sliced Chicago's American League
I lead tai one game.
V irgil Trucks, coming to the
rescue of starter Ted Gray in the
seventh, received credit for his
second victory of the season. Har-
ry Dorish, who replaced Saul Rog-
ovin in the eighth, was charged
with the loss.

Allie Reynolds pitched his third
straight shut out and lifted the
New York Yankees within a sin-
gle game of the league-leading
Chicago White Sox by beating
Washington, 2-0, on five hits.
Reynolds, who hasn't allowed a
run in 28 2/3 innings or a base
on balls it-34 1/3 innings, won his
eighth decision and his fifth in
a row.
Homers by Luke Easter and Al
Rosen paced a 12-hit attack with
which the Cleveland Indians beat
the St. Louis Browns, 8-1, to
sweep a two-game series with the
last-placers.
The Boston Red Sox overcame
a 13-hit attack, including homers
by Lou Klein and Gus Zernial to
pull out a 6-5 victory over the
Philadelphia Athletics.
Two big blasts, featuring three-I
run homers by Andy Pafko and
Duke Snider, carried the Brook-
lyn Dodgers to a 10-4 triumph
over the New York Giants and
increased their National League
lead to six games over their in-
terborough rivals.
With Enos Slaughter pacing the
drive with four hits, the St. Louis
Cardinals swamped the Chicago
Cubs, 14-2, behind some fine re-
lief pitching by Harry Brecheen.
A walk followed by a barrage of
three singles drove Bob Friend to
the showers in the seventh inning
last night and brought the Cin-
cinnati Reds a 2-1 victory over
the Pittsburgh Pirates.

LeadsPGA Qualifiers
OAKMONT, Pa.-(P)-Jim Per-
rier, the stoop-shouldered Aus-
tralian native with the dead-eye
putter, wove a pattern of birdies
over hazardous Oakmont today to
take the first round qualifying lead
in the PGA tournament with a
three-under-par 69.
The big San Franciscan one-
putted 10 greens, sinking four
nudges of from 16 to 40 feet, and
planted a total of eight birdies on
the spacious Oakmont carpets. He
had only 26 putts for the day.

FERRIER'S remarkable round
gave him a two-stroke advantage
over Defending Champion Chand-

four others -- bracketed at 71 -
going into tomorrow's final 18
holes of qualifying.
The low 64 shooters for the
36-hole route go into the cham-
pionship bracket which launches
the gruelling match play cham-

score of 152 to 154 will get in.
