Michigan's varsity mat squad
held its first official practice ses-
sion yesterday afternoon under
the direction of Coach Cliff
Keen who has just returned Ito
his wrestling post after several
months service on Fritz Crisler's
grid staff.
Sixty-two men have already re-
ported for informal pre-season
workouts at Yost field house. In-
cluded in this number are six
veterans from last year's squad.
Heading the list of returning
lettermen is Bill "Corky" Court-
right, captain-elect of this year's
team. Corky was the star of the
1945-46 season, winning the
Western Conference champion.-
ship in the 155-pound class, and
capturing the NCAA crown in
his weight division.
The other returning lettermen
are: Jim Stark, 121-pounder, John
Allred, 128-pound class, Maurice
Smith, 136-pound class, and Ward
Peterson, 175-pound division. Dan
Dworsky, outstanding heavyweight
from the 1945-46 aggregation, will
report to Keen this week now that
his fullback duties are over for
the year.
Several other Wolverine grid-
ders are expected to show up for
wrestling within the next few
days. Included on the list are
tackles Bill Pritula ,andBob
Derleth, and guard Stu Wilkins.
"We've always finished high in
the wrestling picture, and I see no
reason why we can't do it again,"
says Coach Keen. The mat men-
tor is very pleased with the wealth
of material he has to work with
this season and shows an opti-
mistic outlook for the coming
campaign.
Assistng Keen in his duties
this year is Forrest "Butch"
Jordan, former Wolverine letter-
man and Western Conference
heavyweight wrestling cham-
pion. Jordan played guard for
Michigan in 1939 and assisted
with the line this season as a
member of the coaching staff.

NEW YORK, N.Y., Nov. 25-
(IP)--Riding the crest of their
overwhelming 58-6 rout of Ohio
State, Michigan's Wolverines
vaulted into sixth place in the
weekly AP poll to finish among
the top ten teams of the nation
for the seven'th consecutive year.
With Army, Notre Dame and
UCLA (ranking first second and
fourth) closing out their schedules
this week against comparatively
weak opposition, Crisler's men are
hoping seventh place Georgia
Tech will bump third ranking
Georgia in their annual tussle
Saturday. This would allow the
Maize and Blue and fifth place
Illinois to move up a slot since
both have completed their sea-
sons.
The Cadets and Irish staged
another of their balloting photo
finishes with Frank Leahy's lads
moving ever closer but still fall-
ing short by 29 points. Unless the
unforeseen happens against Navy
this week-end, Blanchard, Davis
and playmates will undoubtedly
bow out of collegiate football with
their third straight mythical
national championship.
Sixty-six writers from coast to
coast cast their first place votes
for Army, 32 for Notre Dame and
twelve called it all even. Little
D-laware, unbeaten in 29 starts,
collared two first place ballots but
failed to place. Tennessee, Louis-
iana State and Arkansas rounded
out the select circle in that order.
