Mandarin Coat

i sBack Again
These Can Be Worn For Evening
Or On Beach; Nautica, Scotch
Styles Are Also Being Shown
By JEAN GILMER
If you are a constant reader of
The Daily, you no doubt are well
aware of what the waiters in your
houses think of your customary
breakfast attire-sloppy robe, floppy
mules, hair in curlers, and faces with
tlat morning-after look.
Isn't it about time to change their
opinion? A new ,housecoat is the first
step. Discard your winter coffee-
stained flannel-quilted satin yolk-
spotted and bedraggled chenille robes.
Blossom forth literally in a house-
coat of white pique planted with pink
or blue cabbage roses. It will be as
spring-like and as refreshing as your
face when you smile good-morning.
Housecoats Go Nautical
Or you might go nautical, follow-
ing the popular trend with a white
rayon crepe gown. Sevrely simple, it
his "a sailor collar studded with red
or blue stars. Or the huge dots,big-
ger than a silver dollar, on one rayon
orepe housecoat in red navy, green,
or blue, might catch your fancy.
You can be a Scotch lassie and do
a Highland Fling in a zippered house-
coat of brilliant plaid, either navy
or purple predominating. A terry
cloth robe offers a variety of uses,
from showering to wear on the beach
later in the summer.
Tufted chenille, which swoops and
swirls on flattering houseooats in
colors too numerous to mention, is
also extremely practical. If the bot-
tom of the skirt begins to get grimy,
just plop the whole thing in the
laundry tub and hang it out to dry,
as ironing is unnecessary.
Oriental Influence Seen
You've been hearing much about
the oriental influence of late. Yes,
it has even invaded our secluded
little realm of what to wear while
breakfasting. We don't suggest reviv-
ing those garish kimonos people wore
in the twenties, but what about one
of those little mandarin coats of rich
silk which reach below the hips.
They come in luscious colors of
green, red. blue. or black, embroidered
with brilliant flowers, or perhaps a
huge gold, fire-breathing dragon on
the back. The coats are trimmed with
black braid and frogs are marshaled
down the front.
Next time you go near an Oriental
curio shop' hunt for one of these
stunning coats, or ask a friend who
lives in a city with a Chinatown.
You will no doubt want to wear the
coat as an evening wrap next sum-
mer. If you look hard enough you
may find flat-soled embroidered
slippers to go with it.
Some of the prettiest housecoats
are those of flowered chintz which
one New York store Js selling to
match gay bedspreads and dressing
table skirts. One good-enough-to-eat
pattern has luscious red strawberries
sprinkled on a white background,
while another has bright nosegaysof
spring flowers. You might get an
extra yard of chintz to use as a
bandanna, hiding those breakfast
curlers.
Whatever you pick, get something
neat and gay, and show those waiters
that women can be as pretty at the
breakfast table as at any other time.
New Luggage
To 'Harmonize

For spring vacation, for weekend
trips, for any travelling at all, the
new spring luggage is practical as well
as clever and exciting. Overnight
bags and cosmetic cases are putting
on new spriig coats to harmonize with'
the most recent shades and materials
of shoes and purses. These popular
types of luggage are also being re-
vised for greater convenience.
Campus shops are featuring the
Zuni Ensemble to blend with the pop-
ular new saddle color in shoes. The
pattern is a stripe in neutral beige of
waterproof duck material. There are
also pieces made of the same natural
cowhide material as the shoes.
Another innovation is checkable
hand luggage. This is light-weight
but strong enough to be checked
along with heavier bags.

Shirt Blouses
Are Favorites
Open Neck Collars To Be Worn
Over Jacket Of Suit
Blouses, blouses everywhere, seems
to be the theme song of the stores
as spring approaches. Soft feminine
frilly ones or tailored boy's shirts are
equally popular.
-At this time of year, we all begin
thinking about blouses to wear with
suits or with skirts alone. Most pop-,
ular for class wear, will ,undoubtedly
be the shirt 'n skirt combination.j
Shirts, now being featured have long
sleeves, either high or open necks, j
and come in white, luscious , plainj
colors, or striped materials.
In selecting a blouse for your suit,
remember that collard of blouses arer
being worn outside suit collars this
season and select your blouse ac-
cordingly. If your suit is a dressy
one., why not choose a lacy blouse?
The navy influence is being felt
in blouses as well as other fashion
fields with the re-introduction off
the middy blouse. You know, the
kind your mother wore as a girl, or
the kind Annapolis midshipmen wear
while "swabbin' the deck".
One in which you would feel par-
ticularly nautical is white trimmed
in blue with a large red and blue
ensignia on the sleeve.

Pompadour
Remains 'Top'
Coiffure Style
Upward Swing Of Rolls, Waves
In Hair Arrangement Outlines
Face; Earrings To Be Added
By BARBARA de FRIES
By the time Spring has sent her
forerunner bounding around the cor-
ner, women are mighty weary of the
drabness of their clothes and the un-
predictable whims of winter.
Just so, your hair needs to be stim-
ulated into fresh, smooth and youth-
ful lines in order to help drive old
man winter back into his storm cave
and to beckon the lightness of spring
into your appearance.
Pompadour Is .Tops'
The style of the month unanimous-
ly approved by American Hairdress-
ers is the latest rolled coiffure, the
pompadour. This style is concerned
with an upward swing of rolls with
just a hint of a wave. The back
goes softly down to the base of the
neck where it goes into a deep wave
framed by clusters of curls. The re-
sult is a complete picture of the face
and ears finely outlined with an ex-
quisite arrangement of the hair.
The selling feature of this hair-do
lays in the ease by whi~ch it can be
changed to suit daytime or evening
wear. For evenings, a section of the
left-hand roll is parted off and turned
under to form a semi-circular bang.
Jeweled barrettes placed beyond the
hairline and matching earrings are
necessary additions to this new coif-.
fure.
Coeds Adopt Fads
Coeds have been said to be about
as changeable as the weather when
it comes to appropriate styles. A
new fad sweeps along with lightning
force leaving the other fads wounded
in its wake.
As fast ,as they come, the college
women adopt them. But this spring
they are demanding something "con-
servative" in hair dress. Authorita-
tive sources have answered these de-
mands with the back-from-the-face
fashion line and the top knot of curls.
Characteristic of the first fashion
is the semi-pompadour and the
smooth center back supported by a
series of fluffy curls.
Crocus Wave Is New
Crocus coiffures, a more dressy
style for coeds, resembles the pompa-
lour except for the top which is set
in a heavy wave extending across
the top of the head rather than a
;ontnuation of the side rolls.
Of value to you who are discontent-
ed over the appearance of your hair
is the latest way to add new zest
;o unruly locks. Snip off some bangs,
fluffy or sleek ones. Work them
in with a pompadour or other roll
aoiffures, hunt for a hat that has
>een especially designed to suit the
new hair styles and you find you're
already in a happier mood.
