Men Deride Women's Choice
Of Christmas Gifts As Gaudy

By A. P. BLAUSTEIN
Every year thousands of maligned
males throughout the United States
open ornately wrapped packages on
Christmas Day, presented to them
by loving and well-meaning females,
only to find inside some the gaudy
atrocities one associates with sur-
realist Dali, and not with gifts.
The ties are worst of the lot. They
come in all assorted sizes and shapes,
colors and designs, and flavors and
odors, dandall in all, are less to be
desired about the neck for public
wear than a good five cents shoe-
lace. Men don't particularly dis-
like ties as presents, although they
do rank pretty low in their prefer-
ence lists, but what they do abhor
is the type of neck pieces that wo-
men purchase for them.
Take The Man Along To Shop
It seems impossible for any wo-
man today to believe that her man
just doesn't care to wear that "nice"
canary yellow tie she bought for
him, with his best blue shirt. iHe
also prefers not to have a tie that
will invariably have a two inch knot
in it no matter how he makes it,
or a cravat that will still look like

a pin point although he "turned it
over" three times.
Why women don't take a man
along when they shop has long re-
mained a mystery, for the female of
the species invariably purchases the
wrong thing at the wrong time, not
only for men but for themselves.
Those men are certainly very lucky
who have not as yet exchanged gifts
with their femme de l'amour.
Socks Are Horrible Stripes
Socks are another thing which'
women invariably send to men as
gifts. These are never black or
brown, nor for that matter do they
ever consist of any solid color. Rather
they are made of wool stripes of hor-
rible shades; a typical present of
this sort possessing the colors of
black, yellow, red, blue and green in
it, in the least harmonious pattern
ever conceived. These gifts are usu-
ally relegated to the attic or are
made useful in dusting off automo-
biles or furniture.
Too many girls also send glove
and muffler sets to their boy friends
and, although these gifts are also
appreciated, (for sentimental rea-
sons) they are never worn. One is
really struck by the fact that a group
so inconsistent as women could con-
sistently buy such horrible pres-
ents-and most of them colored yel-
low.
The age of "flaming youth" is past
and though a few "rah-rahs" still
prevail on the campus, the shades
which women pick are too much to
stand.

Iulle For Femininity
It's time for that age-old question
-"What do I want for Christmas?"
Songs have even been written about
this perplexing interragation, so im-
portant does it loom when the gay
spirit of the holidays begins to enter
in. And it's not so far away-Christ-
mas, we mean. So now is the time
to be thinking about it, if you haven't
already started, and that is where
we come in to help you out a bit.
If you are the kind of a person
with an eye to the future, we know
you are seriously considering some-
thing along the apparel line, and
what is more desirable than an eve-
ning dress? It will help, you out no
end when all those gay parties which
typify the holiday spirit begin to
claim your attention. And one nice
thing about. these for presents is
that you can pick them out your-
self.
Tulle Has Sequin Trim
So many are the styles, colors,
fabrics, etc., that we hardly know
where to begin, so we will just start
anywhere and hope that we will find
just what you want.
Wool has found great favor in
fashion circles this year, and out-
standing has been silk jersey. This
material, combined with something
lighter, makes a stunning gown. One
that particularly struck our eye, was
pale blue. The moulded bodice was
of silk jersey, while the voluminous
skirt was of chiffon. , The bodice
was fashioned wit ha low scuare neck
and long sleeves. These long sleeves
are another new feature this season.
If you go for utterly feminine dres-
es, filmy and full, tulle is your ans-
wer, especially when trimmed with
sequins. One we saw has a very,
very full skirt. It was white and
had iridescent sequins criss-crossing
at the waist and on the upper part
of the skirt.
Firefly red is a, striking color.
A tulle gown in this shade has a
shirred strapless bodiec and a full
skirt. A velvet nosegay trims the
bodice, and another is 'caught in the
folds of the skirt.
Small Waistline Emphasized
The very small waistline is being
much emphasized this year. Anoth-
er tulle dress accomplishes this feat
with "corset midriffs" which do t
trick with nary a discomfort. The
skirt is voluminous, and the bodice
is gathered. Very narrow straps
complete the dress.
Silk faille is being featured with
chiffon. A very striking gown which
we noticed in our fashion travels
had a strapless bodice of deep black
faille and a full skirt of e,:udvl.
chiffon. A jacket of th^ ormr n: -
terial made the gown indispn!.ir
for both dinner and evening wear.
And then there is always satin. Its
gleaming lustre makes it a favorite
every year. Pale pink was the shade
of one satin dress which we admired.
The bodice was tucked at the waist-
line.. The v-neck came down from
tiny drapes over the shoulders. A
jeweled broach was clasped at the
center.
Mink For Dressy Wear
t
Christmas is practically on our
doorstep, and with it comes a chance
for that handsome BMOC of yours
to show you that you are really the
girl of his dreams.
Not that any of our fair sex are
meircenary, but one of those little
luxuries that our allowances don't
provide for would be such a lovely
token of sentiment! Do your hands
freeze when you are out walking with
him in a wintry wind? Maybe he
has noticed it, but perhaps he doesn't
know that angora mtitens are pretty
and dear to a woman's heart; even
if they do shed all over his coat.
It might be that you could persuade
him to put a pair of them in Santa's
pack, just for you.
Evening Bag Needed!
Or about that lovely but some-
what worn-looking evening bag you.
have-he probably thinks it's your
pride and joy, because he's never seen
you at a formal dance without it. But
if someone would only tell him that
an evening purse from him would
thrill you to death! Pearled ones,
rhinestone ones, and other dazzling
varieties are lovely, but the newest
and really most sophisticated bags
this year are the gorgeous white fab-
ric ones with a raised pattern in
white, and a small, graceful jeweled
clasp.
We sometimes wonder if men get
as tired of giving us bracelets as we
do of giving ties to our father on his
birthday. But of course they should
not, for what would the best-looking
dress look like, without just the right
bracelet to wear with it?
Do You Smoke?
And cigaret cases-(we really do
have our own cigarets once in a while,
boys)-what could be more fun than
offering someone a cigaret if we
could display an extra-special gift
from the man-of-the hour at the
same time? (He might even reap
one of the profits, sometime).
As a parting thought, if he lives
on the wrong side of the continent,
do you suppose he could guess how
much you would love a long-distance
telephone call? We hope so, be-
cause the telephone company cer-
tainly needs the business!

Pipes Are 'Unsmokable'
One of the funniest things in the
world is the pipe a woman gives to!
her gentleman friend. It usually has
such an ungainly shape that he
smokes it only in her company, if at
all, and never is seen in the streets
with it. The pipes- are either of the
extremely . cheap variety, made for
smoking soft coal, or they are pipes
made by a known manufacturer for
which the girl paid more than it
was worth. 'In either case they still
are, or look, "unsmokable."
But that is not the worst of it for
girls frequently send some tobacco
mixture along with it. It may smell
delightful to the girl when she
smells it in the shop but it usually
has the effect of biting her boy
friend's tongue and smelling like de-
cayed foodstuffs when he burns it in
his pipe.
Fur Coats Fit
All Wardrobes
Deaver, Skunk, Leopard
Are College Favorites
Whether you're sweet and feminine,
hearty and outdoor-ish, smooth and
sophisticated, or just plain cold-
blooded, you will find furs the answer
to your wardrobe problems.
In other words, fur coats, in addi-
tion to being the neatest and warm-
est garments available, can be worn
for almost every occasion-to school,
on dates, or even with formal clothes
if one wishes. A wide price range
plus about 30 different kinds of furs
to choose from assures the prospec-
tive fur coat buyer of getting a gar-
ment to satisfy her needs, her budget
and her personality.
This year mink, though more ex-
pensive than many furs, is very pop-
ular, with beaver, skunk, and leopard
also particular favorites among col-
lege women.
Fur trim and fur accessories also
deserve their place in every ward-
robe. These are guaranteed to pep
up the most ordinary outfit. Fur-
trimmed coats, because they are less
expensive yet very smart, are top
favorites for date wear; trimming is
usually in the way of collars or dol-
lars and cuffs.
The smart new reefers, on the other
hand, are individualized by fur revers
and hip-accentuating fur - tipped
pockets which call attention to that
"hand-span" waistline which one
mnust have this winter.

Unique Compacts
SpotlightAttention
Compacts this year are in many
styles and some have different pur-
poses other than powdering the nose.
Combination compact and cigarette
case, compact and watch, and even
compact and nail polish have been
concocted by designers.
Alligator skin sports compact,
square and flat, has been favored by
the college woman for all around
use, and for evening, a white enamel
square compact with initials en-
graved in gold is very chic and mod-
ern. Unique powder boxes always
