Changes Plan
For Admittance
Admission To Advanced
Course Will Be Placed
On A Competitive Basis
As a result of the large number of
students each year who complete
the basic course in military science
and are eligible for admittance to the
advanced course, the local Reserve
Officers' Training Corps has been
forced to work out a plan by means
of which it will be possible to put
the admittance on a competitive
basis, according to an announcement
issued by staff officers.
When Congress appropriates money
for this purpose it is turned over to
the War Department to be distribut-
ed. The War Department in turn
splits the money up between the nine
existing corps areas. A third divi-
sion is made then among the various
units included in each corps area.
The local battalign is a part of the
sixth corps area, which also includes
schools in Illinois and Wisconsin.
After the appropriation has been
split so many waysrthe individual
units get only a part of the sum
which they could really use, officers
say. In consequence Michigan can
only accommodate 140 men in the
advanced course, and this year there
were 160 who wished to elect the
final two years necessary to receiv-
ing a commission.
In order to lessen the bad effects
of the system the department had
formulated a plan which will give
only the best men in the basic
courses the right to continue the last
two years.
The first part of the grading will
be made up of the man's academic
average in the department, and will
constitute 75 per cent of the total.
The other 25 per cent will be made
up of the individual instructor's gen-
eral impression of the man in drill
periods. Then, if the man is able to
pass his physical examination, 'his
name will be placed on a list in the
relative position that his average en-
titles him to.
