Ann Arbor, Mich.
March 27, 1931
Dear Sis:
I hereby hasten to assure you that
the campus is still in place, and Nickel's
Arcade with its tiny shops continues
to halt the passerby, whether or not
they want to window shop.
Don't I know! Being Friday, I was
waltzing down to the Bluebird this after-
noon for theusual little nail polish-
-when who should I oops into but Hap
Kalverson, looking like Solomon in all'
his glory. He'd just been into Pete Van
Boven's to buy out the store and about
all he didn't have was the front show-
case. The last time I'd seen him was
at a League dance- one of Bob Car-
son's new outfits is playing there, and
deevinely, if you ask me. With a coy
remark that he thought it was Bob's
grand music that made me look nice
but that I still did, he asked me out to
tea. Did I take him up? Ask me! He
promised to meet me later, and I has-
tened on my way, stopping long enough
to glance into the Arcade Jewelry win-
dow to watch Prof. Dow trying to per-
suade Carl Bay, the prop, to invent
something to make his glasses stay on.
Glancing at the big clock, I noticed it
was right smack on 3:30, so I dashed
on for the nail polish, almost running
over Pruce Balmer who hurried out of
Goodhew's Floral shop where he'd been
buying a couple of dozen nice roses
for his fiance. Wish someone nice
would send me an Easter Lily or almost
any kind of flowers-guess I'll never be
a Good hew Girl unless I get busy!
Hap met me at the door after a most
successful manicure and handed me an-
other jolt- he'd topped off his outfit
with some new tan-and-white sport shoes
from Murphy's. "All right, let's see
you limp" I demanded. "Don't be
silly" he grinned," they fit them there"!
Walking up the Arcade, we ran into
Henry Herry, scratching his head busily.
Whereupon, Hap recommended either
that he write the whole Daily himself
or else go to Pat Hart in the Arcade
Barber shop and get a hot oil shampoo.
I guess he must have done the latter,
for later we saw him walking back and
he was beaming, actually and literally
beaming!
We went into the Betsy Ross Shop for
tea, and was it nice? You remember,
sis, their system of writing your own
orders. You don't know whata relief it
is not to have 29 waiters springing
from all points of the compass to hover
over you while you make up your mind.
I elect the Betsy Ross written-order idea
every time-you can take your own
sweet time without being glared at, and
you know how that suits little sister!
Anne Lerner was in with her new
Phi Psi and stopped long enough to
send you her best. She looked positively
charming-it was one of the new Dana
Richardson hats of Watteau style, and
it sure set off Anne to the best advan-
tage.
Listen, sis, I have a new gag that
simply makes 'em fall. Being around the
theater a lot, I got wise to some mat-
ters of makeup, so the other day, I
bought some eye-shading at the Fifth
Avenue shop across the Arcade here.
Used delicately, it give you that cer-
tain look that makes them turn and
look twice-twice as much as they ever
did before. That and some of the new
rouge they have is grand-shall I send
some?
Well, after Hap and I had had our
hot chocolate and toasted rolls hi peace
and quiet, interrupted only once by Pal
Andley's stopping by and almost insist-
ing that he show us a brand new step
he picked up at the Terrace Garden
studio where he spends the afternoons
learning the latest jigs, we went out
into the twilight and who do you think
we saw? Laugh-my dear! I haven't
so much in ages.
You remember Mowers Poulton and
Kenton Bunze, that pair of happy nit-
wits who owned the Gargoyle's five dol-
lars worth of goldfish I wrote you about.
Here they were, in the middle of the
Arcade, amusing themselves with some

of the craziest April Fool tricks they'd
bought at the Caravan shop-matches
that won't light and all that kind of
stuff. I wanted some, so Hap took me
down there and bought a few trinkets
for me. I also purchased the cutest
little Easter Bunny and am sending it-
will you give it to Elise for the niece's
Easter Day?
I'm a funny fool, what? Easter Bun-
nies and April Fool tricks and mani-
cures and makeup and dances and
music and men? What a full afternoon
it was, but I haven't had such a good
time in ages. Hap walked out to the
house with me. I went upstairs to find
the roommate gloating profuse gloats
over some new sixteen-button gloves,
from the Rubley Shop (and by the way,
there is the duckiest pink lace dress in
their window and I want it) she was
putting on the ritz with in the evening.
And so to the dinner table ...
Love to all,

These Standards Never Change

standards never change, more and more people in Ann Arbor
and vicinity are using the savings service of this strong, Federal
Reserve Member Bank . . . proven safe since 1882.
