staying on his feet. His work against ph eep Nelson and Rzskowrski played

six men thrown at him by MinnesotaI
was uncanny but in addition he can
plunge the line, pass a tremendous
distance, and p~unt 45 yards.
The other "truly great" in the West-
ern Conference this year is Herb
Joesting, Gopher leader and Thunder-r
bolt of Jove. Joestia~g has been handi-;
capped somewhat by the abolition of }
the shift but he is still the great ir-
resistible force that made him all-
American last year. His ability at de-
fense is almost unknown as few men
got through Minnesota's line, though
he has shown versatility by his good1+
passing which ha~s been responsible
for putting his team where it finished.
Anquist Is RIgh. Scorer.
Joesting's fellow back, Shorty Alm-
quist, high scorer of the Big Ten, is
a remarkable back and must be given
a ,place. He can pass as well as run.E
His running too is not of the ordinary
sort and it takes two or three men to
bring this squirming, twisting, tear-
ing back down. Few teams can boast
a pair of backs like these.
Louis Gilbert of Michigan is accord-
ed his post at left halfback, on his real
ability as a punter and as a crack
defense man. In addition Gilbert is a
smart player and one who can figure
well in scoring plays as attested by a
glance at Michigan's record. He can
pass and is a most dangerous broken
and open field runner, but most peo-
pile have overlooked they fact that
there are few better blockers in the
country than Gilbert, who is also a
wizard on defense. The selection of a
quarterback caused most trouble, but
honors should go to Toad Crofoot,
Wisconsin leader. The l ittle Badger is
a fine, exceptionally fast runner and
a good punter, as well as a clever field
general.
t Untold difficulty was experienced in
selecting the line. oRuse is adjudged
the best center in the Big Ten. even
though hampered by injuries which
prevented him from meeting his rival,
Bob Reitsch of Illinois, last year's
selection. Reitsch was a great play-
er and it is regretable to leave him
out, but Roush is one of the nation's
best and is everything a center could
be-great on defense, a man who can
r knife or pile up his opposition, sure
at opening holes and a rover who
makes tackles everywhere, Indiana's
altar, Randall, met plenty of tests this
year and held up, thereby earning a

on more downtrodden teams and con-I
seqfucntly dlid not have the opportun-
ities of the other tyro but their true
worth must give them the call. Pomn-
merening of illichigan was a good
tackle and a great ball hawk, being
given a place along with Binish of
rWisconsin who was a great player on
i a losing team.
} Gopher fans call Hanson one of the
greatest guards in the country and it
would appear that they have some
basis for it, though he is just another
member of that great Gopher line.
Baer of Michigan, the fastest guard
one will see in a long time is placed as

who played well all year even though
fhampered by injuries.
hampered by injuries, Grange, fine
player that he is, bows by a shade to
Cameron of Wisconsin and finds a
lgreat partner in Spencer of Chicago
on the third team.
' Rilvalry Among Bricks.
One of the finest scrambles in years
made itself felt in the rivalry among
the backs. Eby was a clever runner
and could do other things besides,
while Timm was perhaps the class of1
the Illini backfield. Cotton Wilcox
was the b~alance wheel of Purdue's
great eleven and Capt.-Elect Rich was'
Michigan's best defense power back-
