Running Backs
BEGIN LONGJOURNEY
(By Associated Press)
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 30.-Knute
Rockne's defensive stonewall if it
holds the plunging Trojan backs in
the intersectional classic here next
Saturday between Notre Dame and
University of Southern California, in
the unanimous opinion of sports writ-
ers who have seen both teams in
action.
Noline has withstood successfully
this season the smashes of Howard
Jones' Big Three-Morton Kaer, How-
ard Elliott and Morley Drury. Pro-
tected by an unusually strong inter-
ference, each of this trio packs the
ball for long gains.
Stanford university, which defeated
U. S. C., for the coast championship
by a margin of one point, had great
holes torn in its lines. Idaho, Oregon
Agricultural college, California and
Montana likewise saw their forward
walls ripped open by the two and
three man interference and the fleet
backs scraping through for gains that
ran up to 25 and 30 yards.
Kaer A Speedy Bach
Morton Kaer, fleet of foot and withj
a baffling twist, represents the big-
ger ground gaining unit of the Tro-
jans. Running in a crouching position
behind the key man in his interfer-
ence, the big quarterback is seldom
nabbed before he has gained from
three to 15 yards. He has shown
somewhat of a tendency to slow up
after two periods and sport writers
believe le will be replaced after that
much action.
Howard Elliott's end running and
passing have bordered on the sensa-
tional in the last few games. Taking
the ball close behind the line of scrim-
nage, he gets away quickly around
end, often outrunning his interference.
He shoots his overheads; fast and low
from a rather deep position.
Drury Is Injured
Morley Drury, big halfback, is not
expected to see action in the Notre
Dame fracas owing to injuries to both
knees. Jones has said, however, that
if Drury is able and wants to go in,
he will not stop him. Drury invari-
ably carries the ball from a deep punt
formation.

problem have led to a survey of the
1 scores for games throughout the year.
Their argument runs as follows:
Army and Navy are equal, and while
Notre Dame has defeated Army 7-0,
and Northwestern 6-0, Navy downed
Michigan 10-0. Thus, Northwestern
'is superior to Michigan, besides beipg
one point better than the Midshipmen.
Other comparisons, however, give
i the Wolverines a decided advantage:
Michigan holds a 37 point advantage
over Wisconsin; the Badgers are 10
1 points better than Iowa, thus making
Michigan 47 points better than Iowa.
Northwestern holds only a 7 point
edge on the Hawkeyes, and Michigan
is therefore 40 points better thanS
Northwestern.
Michigan holds a one point edge on
Minnesota, while the Gophers are 41
points ahead of Iowa. Northwestern
is only 7 points ahead of Iowa, leav-
ing the Yostmen a 36 point lead on
the Purple.
The Wolverines defeated Illinois
13-0, and Illinois downed Iowa by 7
points, this being the same advantage
as that held by the Wildcats over the
Hawkeyes. On this basis Michigan is
to be considered 13 points ahead of
Northwestern.
The Wolverines' 37-0 win over Wis-
consin gives them a 44 point lead on
Chicago since Wisconsin defeated
Chicago 14-7. Northwestern, on the
other hand, holds only a 31 point mar-
gin against Chicago, and this leaves
Michigan 11 points to the fore.

Northwestern twice ran up 21 points
against them, a difference of 41 points.
As additional to plan five-Michigan
has a 62 point lead on Indiana, and
Purdue defeated Indiana 21-0. Thus
Michigan is 41 points better than Pur-
due, and Northwestern's 20-0 defeatI
of the Boilermakers gives the Wol-
verines a 21-0 edge.
One other comparison gives the
Wildcats an advantage: Michigan's
one point advantage over Ohio State,
added to Ohio's 18 point advantage
over Chicago, leaves Michigan 191
points better than the Maroons, and
12 points worse than Northwestern,
since the latter trounced Chicago
3 8-7.
Louis North, of the St. Louis Car-
dinals, pitched in 40 games in 1921,
in all of which he acted as a relief
pitcher.

track are requested to report to Charl-
es Hoyt, freshman track coach, as
soon as possible at Waterman gyminas-
ium. Coach Hoyt is spending every
afternoon this week at the gymnasium
in order to enroll all yearling track
men.
More than 150 first year men have
already turned in their names to Coach
Hoyt and he expects the total to ex-
ceed 200 before the week is ended ' or
the remainder of this week the men
will work out at Waterman gynnas-
ium and next week regular work will
begin at the field house.
Although the majority of the yearl-
ings have had no opportunity to prove
their ability, a number hold enviable
prep and high school records.
Columbia and Colgate will meet on
the gridiron in 1927.
